Two Individual Game Franchises That Should Have Stayed Separate

2.5/5 stars Trials of the Blood Dragon takes the Trials games where you drive a motorcycle through physics based challenges and races, and infuses that with another Ubisoft offshoot title Far Cry: Blood Dragon's aesthetic. Far Cry Blood Dragon was a goofy over the top first person shooter callback to the 80s macho man movies with neon aesthetic. Where this idea came from I have no idea, but it's an experiment that didn't work out. A lot of the core Trials game play is still there with the physics/almost puzzle based levels, but they are way too simplified this time around to where there's no real challenge until almost the very end. What's worse is to go with the weird Blood Dragon storyline they added in, they have added bicycle segments (which control pretty different from the motorcycles), rc car sections (which are just boring), and side scrolling on foot sections where you have to shoot guns. The controls and how these sections play out are painful. 80% of your deaths going through this game will be due to trying to figure out the wonky physics of these sections, and getting killed by the unfairness and unresponsiveness of these sections. I did at least enjoy the attempt at continuing the goofy humor of Blood Dragon, with levels being dedicated to well known movies from the 80s. Some well done humor though isn't enough to save the poor controls and responsiveness of this outing in the Trials series.

Pros:

+ Kitschy 80s tone consistent with Blood Dragon.

+ Some fun bike-based mayhem, especially with guns.

+ Amusing videos between missions, great voice work from Michael Biehn.

+ Curiosity factor will win it some fans. It's novel but very flawed.

Cons:

- Graphics are all over the place.

- Platforming is terribly unresponsive and fiddly.

- Shooting isn't great. …

- Bike stuff is too easy for anyone with a remote grasp of Trials.

- It wants to be all things to all people and will barely please either side; combat won't appeal to Far Cry fans, biking is fun but to easy for hardcore Trials fans.

Full disclosure: I've never played a Trials game before, but I get what it's like/about.

Basically, they mashed together two different things and hoped that it would be good, while introducing some new elements to the Trials formula.

When you're on your bike, you deal with the wonky and unpredictable physics of a Trials game while traversing the elaborate stages. There's some entertainment to be had here, and if it was just this, I might even give it a passing grade, because the silliness can be endearing as you mess around in crazy levels.

Unfortunately, the rest of the game sucks. The action/platforming parts are like something I could make in Game Maker, at least in terms of how the jumping feels. I'm not even exaggerating, because I have made a short freeware game in the past with some of the most awful platforming I've ever experienced. Even still, I think mine might have been more fun.

Yet that's not enough, because TofBD needs to incorporate shooting (both on and off your bike), which is inconsistent, alongside other innovations like a grappling hook that feels incredibly unsatisfying.

They wrap it up in a package that parodies the 80s, while introducing a boring story, and the humour just doesn't work.
