This RPG breaks from the normal formula in a few respects. The battle system does not use any menus, switching all commands to simple button pushes. A being attack, B for dodge, Start will run and the D-Pad is shortcuts to certain spells. The combat is also live, in the sense that if you take too long to complete your turn, your opponent will attack again.

RPG With A Unique, Fast-Paced Battle System And Some Pleasantly Surprising Touches
This review is for the Game Boy version

Preliminary: This seems very interesting! Mother-y in some senses, namely the humor/names, but supposedly has an anti-pollution message. And with a title like this, could be good! Oh and even more neat! Seems at the end instead of only having the usual princess marriage thing, they (apparently without mocking or joking about it) allow you to choose to marry any of the characters, including characters of the same gender. Hmmm. This seems it'll be worth the usual early JRPG length and frustrations.. hopefully! If only this were for the SNES for state-of-the-art Look and Sound for its time!

Stinks there's no fan translation/de-censored version. I have the regional differences pulled up so I can keep that in mind. Thank goodness for The Cutting Room Floor! What a neat resource.

This beginning was... a bit weak. I expected more. And the font moves slowly (this is official translation) and just feels meh.

It has quite a few QoL things so far, namely fast walking and some nifty menu navigation, so that's good and the menus remind me of the early Final Fantasy Legends. The music isn't bad so far, nor is the Look, but neither particuarly good or interesting.

Early Game

It's peculiar how there are so many QoL things like fast (and nice) battle system/battle transitions and being healed after a level up, yet oddly outdated shopping system (and equipping menus system). Regardless of its flaws, I already have taht usual RPG hook and it seems this one will be a faster one than expected, possibly thanks to the straightforawrd battle system allowing me to fast forward through grinds (and I haven't even had to a do a genuine early JRPG grind so far). It has been very straightforward so far, like the "dungeons" are more like hallways simulators, which is fine with me!

Ok some of these names got me to smile/chuckle, like Lola Leftover being the famous singer lol. And I like the pre-FF7 vibe so far of us trying to fight against the one mayor candidate who wants to build a new factory etc, appearing to work for Bio-Haz, which is a sweet name. RE?!

The record factory reminds me of Mother/Earthbound. Yessss I like the layout of this "dungeon" with the giant records and record player, hard to screenshot but a neat idea. That's helping boost the Look and Feel, even if the Sound is mostly just pretty good so far.

I like that Key Items are in a separate menu Misc, so unlike Mother and many other early JRPGs, your inventory doesn't get bogged down by items you either aren't sure if you can drop or are prohibited to drop.

As usual wtih JRPGs, this one has me hooked. Go to next town, upgrade equipment, rinse repeat. The good ol formula set by my favorite Dragon Quest (the first one :-p ). It keeps reminding me of the first Final Fantasy Legend, especially with hwo the equipment upgrading is just so consistent and straightforward. Or maybe just cuz it's for the Gameboy haha. It does feel a bit inocuous though, like this "puzzle" to fix the law billboard was very simple, and missing that oomph that Final Fantasy Legend 1 had of feeling so much like Pokemon and the surreal concept, but still enjoying it.

Woops I just got battered by that Moat Dragon :-p The boat renter even warned me >.< Sweet I'm back and ready to take it on enter image description here

Gosh the Sarg boss was hard tho. It's a bti silly that the music doesn't change during emotional or sad parts heh, like people be dying and stuff it's not a purely humorous game! At least there's a jingle when you get a key item :-p

Lol @ Ralph Vader. And some Nausicaa vibes coming up now. Also nice that I'm hearing some new tunes now, I was starting to mute more and more because I had heard them so many times.

Some really cool boss battle sprites.

Mid Game

I'm considering the Spaghetti Nation mid game I suppose. For the most part, so many aspects of the game have been lackluster, buoyed by my undeniably intense RPG hook (like I'm flying through this and playing hours every day lol), like the whole beauty contest process had such potential but mostly was just meh. However, the boss sprites continue to shine enter image description here

Omg I thought I was a bit overtrained but that boss was hard! It felt like an action game more than an RPG because of how fast he attacked and how much damage he did each time I had to quickly heal attack heal attack, sometimes pepper in a Power when I could since he would cancel my former Power and boost spells actually make a big difference in this game it seems. I do wish attack spells seemed more relevant for bosses, they seem to do way less damage than physical attacks. Luckily they've been very useful with weaknesses for random encounters.

Yessss I dig the use of the Greensleeves-esque tune during the return of Microwave to her home whom you carried on your back lol.

End Game

Welp even tho the plot hasn't really developed or shown signs of being end game, I'm considering the town of Trash to be the start of end game :-p I was falsely temporarily banned from OSRS presumably because I was using a foot pedal while playing this game lol. That is not against the rules but they probly noticed the huge number of clicks as my legs shake up and down :-p Annoying, but I started trying out other games for mobile. Distracted me from my focus on this. I wish the music weren't sometimes annoying and it's definitely starting to overstay its welcome (or I'm crabby), cuz I thought this would be a 4 or 5 star but slowly looking more and more like a 3 star.

Ironically as I typed that I realized this town of Trash is clearly getting closer to Bio-Haz and the plotline is developing in that sense. Darn pollution! And yessss to this riot :-p And oooo okay so the plotline does thicken and connect back to your home planet er Earth.

Uff that fast-paced hard boss fought again! Barely survived yet again, this was a splits second between him using Shove and finishing me off or me finishing him off enter image description here

Wow this town where the people say they're happy so long as they take the medicine Bio-Haz provides and that gets them through the pollution etc is very timely. And finally some new music as I seem to be approaching the final boss. Well-timed.

Overall, the final dungeon was disappointing, just lots of sameness and meaningless chest "puzzles" where most them have trash/useless items with no particularly amazing treasures hidden in, and lots of repeated hallways without special demi-bosses for great equipment etc. And goofy that the second form of the final boss is just the same sprite lol what new "true power" did you unveil?... enter image description here

but still loved the pollution concept, the unique battle system that almost felt like an action RPG I dunno it's hard to explain usually it would've made me mad but when in mood for non-turn-based RPG this is neat, and the usual RPG hook of course.

Oooo so not only is asking one of the npcs of your same gender allowed, you can also just simply say no to marrying at all

Well I was really hoping for a sentimental tune and a sunset like all good endings have, but I liked the message and the fact Lunch Box (my chosen spouse, who is a guy too :-p ) said he loved me with all his heart before I went back to my world :-p and the great wizard ol Microwave had a nice saying enter image description here

Oh okay so they did have a bit of a sentimental ending screen, with the new spouses me and Lunch Box :-p and omg! How cool at the very end of the credits you get access to Sound Test, Monster Book (see below, you could look through all the enemeis of the game! like a bestiary!), and character profiles with closer sprites of characters and in-depth info very nice touch that shows it was a loved game as they programmed it I love when you can tell the creators truly loved the game they made enter image description hereenter image description here

Look: 8/10 Some really cool boss sprites boosted this up. It almost was a 7.5 because of how sames-y so many of the dungeon type places were, but also this is for the GB so.

Sound: 7.5/10 A couple good tunes but for the most part just standard GB fare. For a GB game, it says something that I didn't have it muted always haha.

Play: 8.5/10 Good early JRPG fare, some QoL features but also some flaws and equipment/menu based headaches. I really liked the uniqueness of the battle system, it wasn't just that you press down for healing spells, it was almost like an action RPG

Feel: 9/10 I fully got that RPG hook, plus there are some really nice touches like teh NPC names are cute and the concept of an environmentalist RPG is great and I want to give this a 9 for those features plus the option to not marry at all and to choose men for your marriage at the end, but there were parts where it felt a bit dragging and meh. Then again, maybe this does deserve a 9 since so many of my favorite early JRPGs had that phase and this one, unlike many of those, wrapped up soon after I started feeling that way. You know what, yeah. It deserves recognition for making a high-quality GB RPG with a very unique concept and battle system, plus some aspects in the menu/equipment that reminded me of Final Fantasy Legend 1.

Attachment: 8/10

Overall: 8.2/10

I remember seeing that this game had some goofy names and boy it doesn't disappoint. Between that, being the only game this old I can think of with autosaving, and a unique control scheme for battles it seems like quite an interesting little gem I'm glad to finally be trying. Beat 1x. Has a flexible save system AND an autosave slot! Cool battle system with commands mapped to buttons vs. driven by menus. Enjoyed the game's sense of humor. Remember: inventory will fill up with literal garbage if you open every chest in the final 1-2 areas; check a guide to figure out what to do about that (or avoid it).
