Welcome to the Living Lands, a mysterious island filled with adventure and danger. Set in the fictional world of Eora that was first introduced to players in the Pillars of Eternity franchise, Avowed is a first-person fantasy action RPG from the award-winning team at Obsidian Entertainment. The Living Lands is a place that feels foreign yet somewhat intrinsic to you as it feels the island itself is calling out to you for help. Explore an island home to many different environments and landscapes, each with their own unique ecosystem. Mix and match swords, spells, guns, and shields to fight your way. Dig into your grimoire for spells to trap, freeze or burn enemies, bash them with your shield, or use range bows to attack from a distance. Companions from a spread of species will fight alongside you, with their own unique set of abilities. From a former mercenary to an eccentric wizard, they will be part of your journey with your choices shaping them as you help them with their quests. Read less

Loot is mostly some crafting materials, food or weapons and sometimes a legendary artifact thats not for my build. Tried a sneak archer build but stealth doesnt really work, u can hit 1 enemy and the rest knows ur there. Combat has potential but i think i tried the wrong build, maybe i have to try again with a mage/warrior build.

Characters were interesting, cities were bland as hell. I read that choices u make do impact the ending, which i think is always nice (didn't finish the game, got to second area and almost completed that map before stopping).

Avowed finally showed me some compelling writing last night. The main story/quest is kinda mid at least to start, but I did a side quest into some temple ruins and there were a bunch of books in there that were written well and had shades of Planescape: Torment to them.

I think maybe the sheer number of people involved with video games can be a negative, sometimes; you can tell that they don't have the A-game writers writing everything, and they may not distribute the best writers' content well

I thought I'd be down for playing this after Eternal Strands but I'm not feeling it. The first impression combat made on me wasn't great, I really don't love the dash/dodge/jump situation, and the game's intro didn't grab me. It's not so much that I don't like what I experienced so far, it's might be more apt to say it's …

I thought I'd be down for playing this after Eternal Strands but I'm not feeling it. The first impression combat made on me wasn't great, I really don't love the dash/dodge/jump situation, and the game's intro didn't grab me. It's not so much that I don't like what I experienced so far, it's might be more apt to say it's just not what I'm feeling like playing at the moment. I think the Monster Hunter-ish elements of Eternal Strands made me want to play Monster Hunter Wilds instead, which I had originally planned to put off until later in the year. But Eternal Strands doesn't really have a post-game with more challenging hunts like the MH series does, so I'm left wanting more in a game that isn't prepared to deliver. So maybe MH Wilds is the answer.

I don’t like that jump and dodge/dash are on the same button. Pressing A or forward+A allows you to jump. Pressing left+A, right+A, back+A dodges/dashes. This means I can’t jump in any direction but forward and I can’t dash/dodge forward. I loathe this as a person who regularly dashes and jumps in all directions.

Just wrapped this and am surprised by how much I loved it, especially considering how much fantasy like it tends to bore me. Just wrapped this and am surprised by how much I loved it, especially considering how much fantasy like it tends to bore me. I hope folks stick with it long enough to kind of get the complexity in its writing. Kind of the best pandemic story I think we've gotten since 2020, dealing with how a crisis is manipulated for political gain. I'll always prefer a fantasy game that's trying to say something tangible than one that's just wrapped up in its own lore with nothing to say.

This looks like my kind of game. I saw the reviews and even the ones that gave it a lower score, by what they said, it sounded like I would really enjoy it. This and Indiana Jones a few months ago are really starting to make Game Pass worth the money.

I wonder whether I can put Hyper Light Breaker down long enough to give this a fair chance next week. I am pretty excited for Avowed, it's a very pretty looking fantasy game, but I'm finding it hard to shake the desire for "just one more run" in Hyper Light Breaker.
