Super Godzilla is a 16-bit Godzilla game where the player can take control of Toho's famous big green lizard as they rampage through Japan. The game is divided into two main gameplay modes, Movement and Battle. Movement has the player travel through the city using the D-pad and a map located on the bottom of the screen with the objective being to destroy certain objectives such as enemy humans and buildings as well as pick up power-ups. There is an animation in the screen above the map that shows the results of their movements and attacks. Battle mode kicks in when the player locates an enemy on the map, like Biollante or Mechagodzilla, and is taken to a side-scrolling cinematic-style battle where the player must use punches, tail whips and the famous fire breath to drain the energy of the opposing monster. However, the Fighting Spirit system is present which is in a sense a morality meter where the player must pick the right attacks at the right time in order to connect certain attacks. Choosing the wrong attacks or failing to connect with them will cause the meter to drop and make Godzilla more vulnerable to attack. Less

Weird sim that isn't that much fun or engaging
This review is for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System version

I didnt expect much from this but I was hoping to enjoy it. The game is okay but its just not a lot of fun. It's too bad because Godzilla (and the other monsters all the art really) looks really quite good. There are combat move cut scenes which while they look great, they feel spammy and overused.

The highlight of the game is the detailed hand drawn pixel art.

The game consists of two parts. The first part is... Simulation/tactical and consisted of you wandering Godzilla around the city. Cities are usually split up in 6-8 sectors and the sectors will change when you approach an edge. Each sector you basically want to avoid tanks/missiles and collect the power ups. The power ups let you do things in battle like heal yourself back to full health or increase your attack rating meter. There are also health recharge sites you can visit in simulation mode. Your ultimate goal however is to find and locate the enemy monster on the map which takes you to battle mode. Battle mode is basically a 2d Fighting minigame of sorts that is a bit hard to describe. as you get closer to the enemy …

It's really haphazard and not much fun.

"Super Godzilla. Super Godzilla? Super Godzilla!"

The game isnt long, its fairly easy. You just have to do the above six times and you win. The last few missions have some tougher boss fights but the maps have some kinda gimmick to turn odds in your favor. enter image description here
Very strange game. It's pseudo simulation and pseudo fighting game... Doesnt really do either of them very well. Fortunately its short, easy and the roar of Godzilla kept me at it until it was time to go dip back in the Pacfic for some much needed rest and relaxation...

...Unti next time Tokyo!

I do not like this game. At first I was excited that it would be like the helicopter Strike series only controlling Godzilla, but it is not. The graphics, UI and gameplay are so basic that it seems more like a NES game, or earlier. Moving around is boring and tedious. Nothing exciting or interesting happens. I spent so much time wandering around trying to figure out how to properly control, navigate, and what the goal actually was, that I ran out of time fighting the boss. The simplistic side view boss battle was difficult to predict and burdened with unnecessary cutscene attacks. By the time I more or less figured out the appropriate strategy the time was up. Seems to be a cheaply made game with poorly thought out gameplay and I am not inclined to play it.
