It was fun being back in the Terminator universe but it is a repetitive and generally boring game.

OK, I really liked this game overall. but it's tough to give it four stars. For a long time I'd been tempted to go back and revisit that old Bethesda dog Future Shock, and this game has the same vibe to it and hits a sweet spot that scratches the Stalker itch without going overboard or ballooning into an endless journey. (and jfc is Future shock dated and beyond my paygrade) The game is segregated by mission one after another and has 'interludes' where you go back to a base to buy stuff like ammo and talk to NPCS.

What's nice about the game is the non-linearity of how you engage your missions. It really is pretty good. I would commend it in how it plays very similar to Deus Ex franchise of games. IT is an RPG-lite as you can spec a character with certain upgrades and talk to people. The game has a flimsy attempt to integrate CNC through conversations. The characters are also pretty weak and some of the voice acting is quite bad. So, in the end this makes it very half-assed, and is why i don't give the game four stars. The Shooting aspect is …

The Shooting aspect is a bit strange (wonky) as you pretty much have to stay in cover and come out at certain times. It's mostly, okay, but weird. You have the ability to see through walls which is helpful but also kind of cheesy. The AI is very dumb. So as an FPS it isn't the best. It's weird and different. I would describe it as a bit similar to STALKER in the way you engage in combat (it's built around stealth and ambush) however your enemies are far more resilient and not squishy... Overall, I like this. and odds are if you like stalker, you'll like it too. (HINT)

Stealth. ☑️
Deus Ex-like environmental interaction/objectives ☑️
light RPG skill advances/CNC ☑️
Lore/World Building ☑️
Big maps/ruined cities which are satisfying to be in, roam/reconnoteur and explore ☑️
Nice References to source material (music/audio, grain filter, lighting effects, etc) ☑️

lotta people find this game underwhelming. IT has flaws, sure, but I thought it looked and played great. It's basically a Deus Ex/Shock game based on/looks/sounds like the movies, and feels like that world, one which has aged like a frickin' uzi. A lot of the aspects of the game feel kinda niche (such as the aesthetic/way it looks, or the fact some weapons can't be used against terminators) but other parts are quite solid such as The exploration being rewarding (or the maps that are somewhat nice and open) and stuff tends to be hidden in places if you keep your eyes open. Its main flaw is the bad characters and voice acting which are way below par but it's not a real major focus of the game. The FPS aspect of it is also... different.

Odds, are if you are considering playing this, then i'd easily recommend it. I would easily recommend this to anyone who likes the movies or likes the idea of a rompy open-world type FPS based on them.

the game has chagrins. I'm somewhat wounded by the ending. T(he game apparently went the RPG route and has cutsceneses for them, and they are basically all bad) the balance of various mechanics of it are also really poor.

in the end this is a cool game, it is true to source, and it's unique. it's a lackluster experience, has flaws, and leaves you wanting a satisfying conclusion.

Anyone know of other games like this? Kinda rare it seems... Would like to play more stuff like this... "looter shooter"

it seems there is a fan game coming out at some point that looks somewhat cool. Tech-Com 2033

(this is obviously, a very different kind of game, but figured it's WELL worth mentioning.)

Not a game worthy of the Terminator franchise

Despite being made with Unreal Engine 4, it has very bad looking graphics. There are many games made with Unreal Engine 3 that look much better. The facial animations make the game look like it was released in 2009, not 2019. As for its main story and DLC, the connection between them is ridiculous.

It would have made much more sense to have this DLC playable while playing during the main story. The idea of a DLC that starts from the middle of the game again after finishing the main game doesn't make much sense. On the other hand, the story in general is not very good. There's nothing special about the DLC.

You do almost the same things you did during the main story missions. Some scenes have been added to help us connect more with the main character, but the acting is very bad and the events don't make much sense. The main character and all the other NPCs we encounter are extremely boring and poorly voiced.

The story didn't make me care about any of the people we were fighting to survive together. Then suddenly it killed them all as if I had decided it. There are …

The story didn't make me care about any of the people we were fighting to survive together. Then suddenly it killed them all as if I had decided it. There are a lot of people around you, but the game always wants you to be the hero. You're constantly thrown into dangers almost alone, and after a certain point it forces you into stealth.

I don't like stealth mechanics, so this was very tiring. There are two female characters that we can have romantic relationships with and those scenes were pretty mediocre. It would have been better if they weren't added at all. If you're going to censor the whole thing, I don't understand why they even bothered to add a sex scene in the first place. They placed a lot of collectible items around, but you never need more than half of them during the game.

I hated the side quests in the game, they were repetitive content made up to extend the gameplay. Most of them were really annoying. Finally, Terminator: Resistance's weakest point is that it creates the illusion that we have a choice. It's made to look like an RPG, but from beginning to end, the choices don't make any sense. It is completely linear, so it would have been much better if they reflected the story like Call of Duty.

As a result, I think it is an average game. It can only be played if you have free time.

repetitive and unsatisfying

It's a pretty cool game, but there's not a lot of difference in the terminators, and pinging bullets off metal tin cans that don't react to shots just stops being fun quickly.

Critically Underrated Licensed Shooter
This review is for the PlayStation 4 version

I genuinely cannot fathom how this game has a 45 Metacritic score. Full stop. It makes absolutely no sense to me. Is the game perfect? No. It's not especially deep, the voice acting can be pretty bad, and it looks decidedly basic in the graphics department. But despite all that, I had a really great time with this game, and I strongly recommend it - with the caveat that people unfamiliar with the first two Terminator movies may not find the same appreciation for it.

The user score is 7.5, and that's definitely more apt. The game's scope is not super ambitious, but it doesn't need to be - it tells the story of the future events leading up to the first two movies, although it's set entirely in the year 2030, well after Judgment Day. It does a decent job showcasing the bleakness of this world, with a lot of the set dressing and abandoned notes doing a lot of that heavy lifting. The gunplay is basic, but still a lot of fun. You see the robot, you aim at the robot, you shoot the robot. Red glow means weak spot. But I was actually really impressed by how …

You see the robot, you aim at the robot, you shoot the robot. Red glow means weak spot. But I was actually really impressed by how much of a threat the enemies in this game are... I actually had to push the difficulty down to easy in the interest of timing, but most of the enemies, and especially some of the later Terminator models, can absolutely rip you a new asshole. It's very in keeping with the lore, and actually sets up some moments of genuine horror - particularly an early scene where you have to use stealth to evade T-800s patrolling an old hospital, whilst you have no weapons with which to engage them.

A weird nitpick of this game, though, is a result of what I presume to be a language barrier... The devs are Polish, and the game is set in LA. However, because of some bizarre writing style issues, it doesn't feel like LA. If that makes sense. The verbiage never feels right, and I spotted dozens of grammatical and typographical errors. And while the voice cast occasionally nails their assigned roles, they rarely have California accents - and sometimes, the actor's original accent (I presume British) comes through unintentionally. It's kinda funny, but in a game that relies so heavily on atmosphere and world building, it's a bit of a shame. Additionally, the slightly cartoonist art style doesn't mesh too well with the established look of the movies - my presumption here, though, is that they're trying to go for a style more akin to the Terminator comics, as the European release does come with a prequel comic.

But that's really it for the downsides, and they're easy to overlook. I came into this game expecting like a "Oh hey, it looks like the thing I like" licensed video game of middling quality. What I got was a genuinely great experience that occasionally elevates to strong moments of excitement and dread resultant of the gameplay and world building, and actually does a really great job of providing a creative and interesting spin on a moment of the Terminator storyline that didn't really need explanation, but left me compelled anyway.

Strong recommendation to Terminator fans. Unfortunately, here in North America, Limited Run Games (ew) has distribution rightsto the physical release. However, you can import the Euro version - and the game is published by British outfit Reef Entertainment - for dirt cheap. I paid $30 CDN. Well worth that price.

A love letter to fans of the first movies and a really fun game

It’s really weird to me how under appreciated this game was. Resistance is a really cool FPS that plays as a welcome love letter to everyone who is a fan of the first 2 films. There are tons of throwbacks and references to them sprinkled throughout the entire game, and the - surprisingly solid - story does a great job at giving the lore some cohesion and sequentiality. Above all, this is a pretty cool game set in an impressively accomplished Terminator universe, one that I never got tired of exploring in the 14 hours I spent with it. From the awesome, heavy-synth, old-school soundtrack to the believable, war-devastated post-apocalyptic hubs, there is very little Resistance does wrong in terms of world building. The game looks and sounds as Terminator as it gets, and this immediately becomes the central hook for fans of the original feel of the franchise, making it truly enjoyable from start to finish.

What I wasn't expecting though was the amount of RPG elements Resistance incorporates. I’ve never seen it labelled as anything other than an FPS, so this was a surprise to me, and a welcome one at that. There isn’t anything groundbreaking here …

There isn’t anything groundbreaking here (and things like lockpicking or hacking are essentially clone versions of other games), but everything that is included is well designed and contributes to the experience one way or another. XP and progression is handled extremely well in early stages, side quests fit in well with the main narrative and never feel like a chore, the skill tree is simple yet useful, weapon upgrade is really smart, and the inventory, looting and crafting systems offer quite a few gameplay options (though one could question the usefulness of the latter considering how abundant looting is). All of these as a whole added to a great rounded experience, even if Resistance never actually feels like an aRPG.

Two other things surprised me quite a bit. The first one is the choice/consequence that was implemented. Both this system and the dialogue trees that make up its skeleton are quite basic, but they are enough to deliver tangible impact in how the smaller story beats play out. Tied to this are the characters you interact with along the way. There aren't many, but they are well written and well voiced, and unintrusive enough that you always feel compelled to engage and listen to what they have to say. The second thing that surprised me were the stealth mechanics. Between skill points, hacking and tools, you are given several options to avoid all guns blazing combat, and this is something that is particularly helpful especially in the game's first act, when you are too underpowered to deal with bigger threats. This works extremely well at this stage: narrow corridor moments can feel truly tense in the beginning, and encountering - meaning having to avoid - your first T-800s is nerve wracking. This is further aided by the save point system, which is usually spaced out enough to you give pause before entering combat without some strategic thought.

Now on to one of the main FPS aspects, the shooting. I won’t sit here and pretend this is peak FPS feel, but I do think gunplay is pretty satisfying as a whole. Almost all weapons feel great to use and controls are punchy and responsive, meaning I had a great time in combat throughout the vast majority of the game. Where the game lacks however is movement, with a bit of jank especially when it comes to sprinting and jumping. Enemy AI can also seem a bit finicky at times and not very challenging, but to be honest, neither of these was ever enough to reach frustration levels. Worse is the clunky and unintuitive way you swap weapons, which can be quite annoying and actually affect combat pacing. This, combined with the fact that you start to get pretty OP towards the later stages, did bring the experience down a notch.

But some LOD, facial animations and light polish issues aside, there really isn’t much else to criticise this game for. This means Terminator: Resistance is easily recommendable providing the main requirement is fulfilled: if you consider yourself a fan of both The Terminator and Judgement Day, you’ll likely be in for a treat. The awesome sound design and art direction, competent gameplay mechanics, fulfilling narrative and elegant fan service are more than enough to look past its flaws and enjoy a nostalgia trip that you get to slightly shape and experience firsthand. 8/10

I need to get rolling on the Mass Effect Legacy Edition at some point (probably next year) so I can remember what Bioware used to be like. The heart and soul they put into this series is nothing short of magical. One of the greatest sci-fi series of all time, alongside Halo!

I wouldn't mind seeing Bioware do some remakes like many other devs are doing!!

Plays like a throwback shooter to the 360 era, very simple gameplay that can become very repetitive quickly. Luckily, I was able to complete it 100% in just over 10 hours, so at least it doesn't drag itself out. Regardless, it was fun to be back in the Terminator universe, especially during the war itself.

Have heard that this is a competent, B-tier adventure shooter. Only posting just because I think everyone, like me, probably wouldn't give it the time of day otherwise. Don't if it is "hidden-gem" material, but it seems weirdly better than expected. Maybe another case of that shitty Mummy movie spawning a decent licensed game out of nowhere to go with it?
