In The Bottom of the Well, you play as Alice who has just had an unsettingly life-like dream about the end of the world. She retells her experience to her friend in a huge, branching narrative. Although a single play-through might take as little as 20 minutes, experiencing all the possible paths Alice can take through the ruins of her city will take you many hours.

I thought the gothic atmosphere to this game was a nice touch and the story is pretty good, but aside from clicking your answer (it's a visual novel), you don't actually get any real imagery to work with. You are Alice (of Wonderland, but like an older gothic version) and you're chatting with your friend Mad Hatter (again, a gothic version), telling him about this dream you had. The dream, however, is where you make the decisions of what happens when. When you begin the game, you get to decide how you want your Alice to be (customized, random, dark, standard, etc), which will indicate her "survival" during the dream. For a free game, it's not really that bad, but I got bored and just don't have interest in trying to get the different endings.I would only recommend if you're bored and just want something quick to play (and not looking for any real substance).
