Way of the Red is a 2d action platformer with fun combat, fluid movement, satisfying kills, and an engaging story. Imagine a smooth, modern Ninja Gaiden with Smash Bros influences. Splatter blood across the land through four massive zones, each with their own unique environments, characters, and secrets. Use satisfying and versatile sword techniques to shred enemies to pieces. Mutate your character with the mysterious red seeds, and learn new abilities from hidden characters.

Play it. Git gud. Then put it back on the shelf forever.

This is a "git gud" platformer, focusing on replaying the same parts of a board over and over until you have the movements down perfectly. That might work in some cases, such as Shovel Knight, but here it just feels punishing and uninspired. I found myself gripping my controller tighter and tighter as I played, hoping that I would finally get it right this time so I could finally move on.

--The Good--

  • Fun retro art and aesthetics.
  • Good music that managed to sound retro but also moody in a modern sense.
  • Simple story that didn't get too much in the way but still managed to be a little existential.

--The Bad--

  • The wall climbing was too finicky. That was the main reason I kept failing.
  • The overall world was uninteresting. There were flashes of things I liked, such as playing as a birdman instead of the typical human, but otherwise the characters and settings were forgettable.
  • Gameplay was not satisfying for someone who doesn't want to waste time being a video game athlete and "gitting gud."
