Back when Wrack was released, it was right when the term "boomer shooter" was getting popular, this is probably one of the first of the Doom-Clone revival wave that has now been much popularized with titles such as Dusk. And as a result, it doesn't QUITE get the rhythm of doom clones right, from the get go you understand the movement is a bit wobbly, the enemies have a weird pathing, the animations a bit slow and stiff, but HEY if you are that desperate for a doom clone, this is it.
It's kind of weird because yes it is probably a very passionate project, but a part of me also feels like it could be released as one of those "comes with a cereal" games. It doesn't feel as snappy as it should be, and you can even get yourself softlocked in certain parts if you do not have ammo to defeat an enemy. There is a scoring system that could work and be of additional fun but it never works due to the dissonance of speed, again you control FAST as hell (wobbly too also) but everything else is slow in comparison, it's like the pace is all …

It actually pains me to be extremely critical of this type of game because it is obvious that the indie development team has put some soul in it and wanted it to be one of the best Doom Clones there is, it is also painful because you go look up anything about this game and it is just the DEV going: Sorry, we are shutting down :( does anyone wanna get paid to design levels? :(
Which is genuinely sad to look at honestly. They've essentially shut down because of lack of popularity, I bought this game around 2015 and only now I have been playing it. Listen, saying your doom clone is a bit mediocre in comparison to the other doom clones is a bit harsh especially when the developer has gone bankrupt in making a sequel that really just added a tower defense mechanic on top of this.
I'm sure Wrack would be up to my standards if it had some tweaks, maybe make the story be told through the game in a subtle manner rather than these dialog cutscenes (all it is, is essentially aliens attack and earth is defenseless because it's at peace, and only one person who still is ok with guns is the one who is saving earth, I don't know why we need 6 characters with a lot of dialog for such a simple plot, and if they really wanted to tell a story they could of sparse it around or made it more integral).
Cannot say this enough: make the animations more snappy, make the enemies have less health and improve their movement too, the melee taking a while to wind up when you walk extremely fast is disorienting sometimes, and you are gonna use a lot of that melee attack that is slower than ALL of the melee attacks of enemies because ammo sometimes rapidly depleted, maybe I missed some ammo? Make ammo more apparent in the level, make colors a bit more concise and make every pop out? Not a major complain apparently some even like it but the music sounds just... Bland and repetitive.
There could be some fun to be had here sure, but again a game like this lives and dies by it's weapons, and it's weapons don't feel good, and there is a serious ammo scarcity, and sometimes shots just do not connect. Maybe I've been spoiled by the ACTUAL boomer shooter wave we have today, and not the hint of what it was around 2014.
