F.I.S.T.: Forged in Shadow Torch may be an awkwardly named game, but it is also a solid Metroidvania title. The game may follow the genre blueprint faithfully, but the environments feel more than a series of corridors, since there are a number of open-air areas to traverse. The combat is fluid, and the movement tricks make you feel powerful very early in the game. The adventure flows by at a good pace, and the amount of secrets will keep you exploring each environment for quite some time. Genre fans and those who love a good 2D adventure will be happy with this title in their collection.
As I played more of the game, it appeared clear that it was developed by fans of the Metroidvania genre with a lack of experience or skill. There is ambition at work here, expansive map, tons of items to discover and ever expansive combat tools, however it is in the fine details that the game falters. Tedious and friction laden stealth and puzzle sections that showcase an inability to spice the game up without resorting to tired ways to challenge the player, and an overall sameness to the entire affair.
The creators are trying really hard to create a memorable story and charming characters, but the fuzzy cast seems pulled out of a creepy third rate puppet tv show cancelled after a test screening ended up with traumatized children begging their parents to leave. I’m not sure whose idea it was to have a bunch of rejects from Watership Down and Animal Farm as the unlikely heroes of a clunky futuristic rebellion, but suffice to say I was skipping cutscenes and hitting buttons with zeal during conversations.
To be honest I’ve always preferred my Metroidvanias light on story and dialogue, environmental storytelling should be key here, and the only thing …

It’s not all bad, mind you, combat was enjoyable enough in a belt action kind of way, and the presentation even though lacking in style indicates a lot of work went into it, but there is a very strong lack of polish that permeates most aspects of the game and I can only recommend it to Metroidvaniacs who’ve played pretty much every other game in the genre and need a fix. For others, if the mood strikes you there is so much better out there.
This game wasn't bad, but I didn't get through to the end.
It's so washed out and the areas of the map are far too big and the main character lacks traversal options apart from running.
I just have too much to play to spend more time running back and forth and the fast travel just isn't good.

NOTE: I have played this game on the Nintendo Switch. Do not make the same mistake. It is not optimized for the Switch.
F.I.S.T. is a metroidvania action game that features a big world, great combat mechanics and a decent story. The difficulty of the game is great. Starts relatively easy, but as the game progresses, it gets more hard. The last 3 bosses were quite a challenge for me.
The world map is huge, and it neatly follows the classic metroidvania formula, with backtracking, opening shortcuts and new paths as new power-ups become available. Its dark cyberpunk style fits neatly with the story of the game, however, one downside of it is that a lot of areas appear similar to each other, making it rather difficult to differentiate between them.
By the end of the game, you end up with three different weapons, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. I ended up using one for bosses, one for multiple enemies, and one mostly for navigation. The protagonist can learn additional moves and combos with all three weapons, through an intuitive upgrade system. The upgrades themselves aren't hard to unlock - there is no annoying, unnecessary grinding.

The soundtrack isn't remarkable. The overworld songs that play are groovy and nice to listen to, but they aren't memorable.
Having said all that, there are some things I'd like to address that drastically lowered the grade for me. First of all, there is a lot of amateurism in the way the game is created. It has been created using Unreal Engine, and it's clear the developers didn't clearly understand the engine. Animations snap, fade in/out is triggered too late, the FPS is low (at least on the Switch) and widget navigation is buggy.
Second,
All in all, if you don't mind indie amateurism, it's a fun game. 3/5.
The best way I could describe this game is “Metroidvania candy”. It’s really impressive at first, with great HD 2.5d graphics, smooth responsive movement and combat, and a super well-designed map. It’s so fun to run around collecting secrets and learning new combat moves.
But the game really loses momentum. The story is super boring and generic, the characters and art style are just corny, and the game doesn’t really make you think outside the box. It’s just the same gameplay loop over and over. Even with the few new mechanics introduced, they’re all pretty dull and actually worse than the initial game.
I got all the way to the final area and decided to quit. I didn’t care about the ending, getting 100%, or doing the final boss fight. I was just ready to leave the games atmosphere forever, as it became quite draining and mindnumbing.
I like the map, the movement, and the graphics are definitely high quality. But I couldn’t recommend this game past the first few hours, as it really doesn’t offer much beyond that.
I just realized that I grew an aversion to text boxes in cutscenes.
Wanted to try this game (got it free on Epic), was impressed by the graphics and liked the setting.
First cutscene looks cool and actiony and I get a bit excited, then I go "oh no" when I see that classical Asian game text box.
That kind of text box that means now you'll be info dumped with tons of uninteresting text, while the characters just stand there and do the same "talking" animation over and over.
This game was a lot of fun. Just wrapped it up at 96% completion in 10 hours, collected everything.. but I imagine the boss rush mode on the arcade machine is what I need to finish to get the full 100% and it drove me nuts lol.
Highly recommend if any fans of metroidvanias aren't currently playing Silk Song (which I just bought, was waiting to finish F.I.S.T. before starting it).

Cons:
It strikes a good balance between challenging and outright difficult. Most main bosses I beat with a tiny bit of health left over. I ended up, disappointingly, resorting to a few basic combos with the drill for 99% of enemies because it became comfortable and I could reliably hit it.
Overall a ton of fun, I can see why this game gets recommended all the time. 8.5/10 for me!
I've been getting into F.I.S.T. Forged in Shadow Torch, and I'm digging it but after 2-3 hours it still feels like I have no idea how to use the combat system! I either mis-press buttons, get the timing wrong.. but now that I have multiple weapons it's getting to be frustrating figuring out the combat. I'm used to fast-paced attacks, not typically a fan of these "choreographed" press button and wait 2 seconds for the attack to happen... it's why I despise Dark Souls and will never attempt any of them...
This is a minor complaints as I think I'm getting a little better at it?? And either way I dig the game and the style more than enough to keep going, I just wish I could crack the code to the combat.
Anyone have any tips??
Ordered the PS4 steelbook edition with the free PS5 upgrade. Can't wait to finally check this one out in what seems to be the best version of the game.
I'll tell ya folks, nothing has really gotten me going this year. Since January I've been playing 7 Days to Die (again) pretty much non-stop and nothing has gotten even close to being as enjoyable. But after my Metroidvania-palooza last year, and with Silksong releasing some time in the next decade, I want to dip my toes back into the genre. It's been too long since I've been itching to get into gaming for the night.
Finished F.I.S.T - Forged in Shadow Torch
This was ultimately a fun, but flawed game. Entertaining game with good graphics and game mechanics but pretty repetitive too. Story is nothing special. The cutscenes are vague, characters aside from Rayton and Cicero is forgettable, and the ambiguous ending is beyond annoying and will definitely leave a bad taste in most gamers mouth like it did with mine. Voice acting and English localization are poor too.
Also while most games can get repetitive with their gameplay the fault with this one is it becomes to bland and the entertainment value drops pretty fast after a few levels. The major issue I had and I'm sure many other gamers had and will have is the backtracking to complete a level. Like with one level I couldn't finish because I needed to upgrade an ability to overcome the obstacle stopping me. Fair enough but when you're backtracking almost the entire level trying to find what you need to upgrade yourself to pass the obstacle it becomes annoyingly frustrating.

For the price the game is worth getting but you might not find it as entertaining as you first think and it's a game that I don't find myself going back to play again very soon. Despite all that, the tight controls, solid graphics, engaging item collection, and enjoyable boss fights made this into a worthwhile journey.
