Been thinking about doing a series on PS2 games that still hold up today - FlatOut would probably be top of that list. Full disclosure, I have a lot of nostalgia for this game, particularly the main starting track.

Everything from the american rock music whilst you're racing, to the incredible physics systems, and the simplicity of the car upgrades. It all just fits into one neat package. Playing the steam version at the moment with a controller plugged in and it's taking me back to 2005.

I don't know if it's the nostalgia or the fact that I've just missed a good old fashioned plug and play racing game, but I can't overstate how beautifully simple it is. I love that there's only a handful of cars to choose from, and the upgrades are linear, meaning that your car can only really get better and better although I think there is finer tuning if you want it? Perhaps if this were a £30 game i'd be complaining about its simplicity, but there's something really joyful about jumping straight into a race and just focusing on smashing some cars up and finding those shortcuts!
