After five years of development time, it was well-received publicly and critically, shipping a total of 10.85 million copies worldwide as of March 2013, making it the best-selling PlayStation game. The game uses two different modes: Arcade Mode and Gran Turismo Mode. In the arcade mode, the player can freely choose the courses and vehicles they wish to use. Winning races unlocks additional cars and courses. However, Gran Turismo Mode requires the player to earn different levels of driver's licenses in order to qualify for events, and earn credits, trophies and prize cars by winning race championships. Gran Turismo features 140 cars and 11 race tracks (as well as their reversed versions). Read less

Granted, I don’t have a license in real life either, so it’s basically like the first time piloting the ship in Outer Wilds every time I play an actual “simulation” racing game. Probably ought to stick to games that are easier to handle.

Mechanics of Game do not age well

The way the license tests work is horrible and anything the game gained from a realistic racing had the fun sucked out of it by this screen. I never played the first Gran Turismo and thought it would be cool to revisit this game, but only found frustration and annoyance.

The UI is wonderful as well as the soundtrack, while the feel of the cars and the driving itself is top notch. Car and level design set the standard for its many sequels to come, but there's just something special about Polyphony's original driving simulator.

This game is such an epic classic. Never forget trying to earn my licence. The music is super nostalgic too
