My face when I saw the artstyle.

My face when I played it and realized it is a fucking roguelike (and not a good one).

Started this today. This is my Starfield, as in, this is the game I was hyped the most. I knew it was going to be a small game, made by an indie studio... But it showed promise and love of the source material. I love Hellboy, Mignola is my favorite comic book artist, and I have a nostalgia for that time where I had fun with a Hellboy game [when I was a kid I loooved, and beat a couple of times, Science of Evil wonder how it has aged? loooool]

But this is how I see things:

  1. the gameplay will become tedious. A roguelike without much variation, that's damming. A roguelike that isn't too hard, its also damning. No variation and too easy, not quite the combo (at least make it a bit of a challenge) [note, I have only played about an hour of a 20 hour game, so this could age very badly... but some roguelikes, most that i have played, shed their easygoing attitude in the very first minutes, this seems very relaxed...]

  2. very early in the game one of the npcs say: 'pace and tone shape more a story than plot and character'. should have thought about that when making the game... Because where's the pace and tone? Are you sure you should have forgotten plot and character that much?!

  3. The art style is very cool, it's the closest we have gotten to a Hellboy game to dive into taking a dive into Hellboy's aesthetic. however, like Sable and Morbius, it looks cool for a minute, but it clearly looks more like an 'approximation' to a facade of Mignola style than translating the actual virtues of the artist's form into the game. by which I mean: a Mignola panel is never flat... its always rich in composition, shadow and color. This game looks cool, but flat... It looks very same-y.

I guess that they haven't cracked the formula of the perfect Hellboy game yet. BUT, given that this is a small game by a small team sold at a reasonable price (although, not worth it for what it actually offers, I'd say, unless you are into the character as much as I am, in that case, you will have already bought it!); I'll give them my vote of confidence: they have some of the art direction there, they just have to work on 'how' to deliver the Hellboy story. Think about pace and tone, look at Mignola, the first volume Seed of Destruction, everything is there. I hope they'll get there, if they want to try and make another -or are given the chance. I hope they do!

ADDENDUM:

Playing it on PS4, wanted to have the console experience. And well... Its broken. Or either poorly optimized, or we have really entered into a new gen and this is a museum piece (although, I don't know, at 2GB this game doesn't seem that demanding, of course, I might be wrong, don't know much about it to have a strong opinion...) But the frames (a nightmare) and textures aren't working there (they usually have that flaw, where the screen seems to be divided, like ripped, specially when moving the camera, that has a name and I know of it, but I just forgot and its driving me insane... someone help please!!! lool!)
