Commander Keen in Aliens Ate My Baby Sitter! (1991)

Preliminary: Despite its flaws, this is just soooo mid 90s DOS (And an early example of it). the way this light switch is shaped and the music ahhh

I'm really very impressed with this one, tho I was with number 5 too and burned out, we shall see if I go for longer this time.

Day 2

I love the menu that comes up during the top-down parts. I like the adventure elements of the top-down part too. And the music. Well, there's lots to like about this :-p I just hope I don't bore with the DOS-style platforming, usually that can only get a 3 for me, even if there is a joystick option it never quite feels like an SNES platformer.

Yep, with some plessy platform collision masks and awkward jumping moments, I accepted that despite its amazing Look and Sound, this will just be another 3 star DOS platformer for me. As far as DOS platformers go though, this is great. And I highly recommend it for people who love those, as well as anyone who has nostalgia for the Commander Keens.

Feel: 7.5/10 I really feel like this deserves an 8 for Feel, but that would boost it to a 4 star and I feel that that's unfair compared to many games I get hooked to that get a 3. I think if I had this when I was young, and it was one of my only games I had access to, I would get used to all its quirks and fully be in love. But as it is, moving on.

And finally, the last game on my and my girlfriends co-op journey through the "second" Keen trilogy.

Commander Keen 6: Aliens Ate My Babysitter! is yet again more of the same. This time, the setting is an alien planet with all kinds of crazy creatures and environments. I like the setting of Keen 6 the most and I think my GF also shared the sentiment. The aliens and levels are just so fun, colourful and kooky. As a slight minus when compared to the other games, Keen 6 is a bit buggy. There's some slight hitches in the levels and collision detection. Nothing major but it seems that it didn't get the same level of polish as the previous two. Amusingly, this is also the only Keen game that has a bug where you can jump on top of your blaster guns projectile and shoot straight up to the sky. A really fun way to sequence break stuff in the levels.

I think the second Keen trilogy (meaning episodes 4-6) did a lot less well than the first, and Keen 6 drew the shortest stick of all. Episode 4 was shareware with episode 5 being the paid addition to the package. Keen 6 was just a standalone game sold individually, and that probably made it a lot less popular. It's a shame. It's a really fun game.

All in all, Keen episodes 4-6 are (almost) consistently fun platforming experiences. Going through the whole trilogy doesn't take more than 10 hours. If you want challenge, each game has three difficulty options where the hardest really ramps up the challenge.
