Double Dash is my fav Mario Kart, but my biggest complaint is that it's hard to go back to only having 16 tracks when every game afterwards had 32+. This mod remedies those issues by adding 32 tracks, bringing the total to 48. Great fun if you and your friends want to play Double Dash with more tracks. 31 of the tracks are retro tracks from other Mario Karts and it's fun seeing them remade in Double Dash for the aesthetics and mechanics. They also replaced palette swap karts with more unique designs, which is a welcome change to bring more visual variety. 2 battle maps were replaced with new ones, but I wasn't able to play them since I played solo. Some things that I didn't see confirmation for, but I felt were changed: cars on the road seem to go faster making city maps more chaotic, it's harder to hit with green shells, red shells and blue shells seem better and are harder to react to, and it felt like there must have been rebalancing done to kart stats.

If more Double Dash is what you want, I'd recommend checking out this mod.

This game has such a cool gimmick. The double carts and changing items depending on the character was really ahead of its time. The controls were also a little wonky but tight at the same time. My favourite course is Daisy Cruiser.

Day 26: Lotta chatta about Mario Kart so here's one of my favourite course tunes. A bit late because I'm a terrible person.

Grouvee please introduce a half star rating scale. I need to give this game 4.5 stars because in my mind. It's unparalleled! Can you remember the rush of playing through all cup the morning after a sleepover, your mom waiting in the car outside while you beg her to let you finish rainbow road??? No??? Then you would probably have some complaints about this game and that would be fair.

I love the double up mechanic and I love throwing items. I have tried many times to get friends who have played other Mariokart titles to play this one with me and it never goes quite how I want. The double ride was a fun twist! I will not back down from this opinion!

Additionally, I think the course design and driving mechanics hit a nice medium here, and hold up surprisingly well.

Item balance is a double edged sword

I started playing this game again a bit ago, I haven't played this game since I was a kid, so I decided to see if it holds up. This game is notable for having a unique mechanic that allows the player to choose two racers, one controls the items, the other drives. Each character has a set partner, (I.e. The Mario Bros., The Kongs, Bowser and Bowser Jr.) but you can also mix up characters. The reason you would do this is because each character has a special item. If you want only one special item, choose a certain pair of characters, if you want two, you'll need to mix them up. This adds an element of strategy that isn't present in the other games. However there is one issue with this system, you can no longer hold items behind you, so you will get hit constantly by items, especially on higher difficulties. You also can't retry a race in a grand prix if you do poorly like in 64 and Super Circuit. This can make the game extremely frustrating in single player when you are trying to unlock characters and cups, but in multiplayer, this makes the game even more fun. If you're playing this game in multiplayer, especially with four people, this game is an aboslute blast. The battle modes are extremely fun too. Balloon Battle is great, but Shine Thief is my favorite mode. You think you won by getting the shine, but at the last second, your friend will take it from you, it's insanely fun. Overall, this game is fun, but frustrating in single player, and an absoulute blast in multiplayer.

This is a frustrating game. At the higher difficulties the items coming at you are relentless. That was one of the big reasons I put this game down after playing it only a few hours back fifteen years ago when I first bought it. My frustration at not being able to play the newer kart games though eventually brought me back to this title, the first "modern" Mario Kart game. After earning gold in every cup here are my impressions:

--The Good--

For me no other game feels quite as good as a Mario Kart game. I drift in other games, but it never quite feels as buttery smooth as a Mario Kart drift. I shoot weapons in other games, but every single time I use an item or weapon in this game it feels like a tactical decision. I play racing games on all kinds of tracks, but none have the variety and precision of the sorts of tracks found in a game like this one. It all comes together with Nintendo's classic polish to create a game experience that is refreshing and fun.

--The Bad--

If you have played most any other Mario Kart game though you know how brutal a game like this can be. We've all seen the videos and gifs of Mario Kart racers being relentlessly pounded by all kinds of items. The Blue Shell is a meme all by itself. At higher levels of difficulty in this game it sometimes felt like I couldn't get a hundred feet without being hit over and over again by every conceivable type of shell. Add to this the frustrating reality that the game cheats to bolster your "rivals" and there were times where I had to shut the system off for the night because I was just getting too worked up over it. And unlike Mario Kart 64 which allowed you to retry a race if you placed below 4th, in this game there are no do-overs.

--The Verdict--

When approaching this game there are a few things to keep in mind. First, give it a fair try and spend some real time playing at lower difficulty/speed levels. Let the feel of the game sink in. If things just feel good then you might be a Mario Kart fan in the making. Second, this is one of those games where you have to practice and improve if you want to succeed at the higher difficulty/speed levels. If you are more casual (as I usually am) it may just be more fun to stay at 50cc and not worry about anything else. Finally, get comfortable with frustration. You will get hit with a blue shell just before you finish in first place and you will end up finishing in fourth place. You will get bounced off the track into lava or outer space the moment before you launch your special. This happens much less often at 50cc though, so again if you want an easier time it may be more fun to just stay at that level.

Overall if you come at this game with the right mindset I don't think you will regret your time with the first truly 3D Mario Kart game.

This was far and above my favorite Mario Kart title. Being able to play as a duo and knocking people around was my favorite part of this franchise, and getting good at punching around corners as a team really increased the couch co-op aspect of this title.

Pretty fun racing game. Lots of tracks, cars, and characters to choose from. Provided my cousins and I with hours of fun for a long time.

Team Koopa and Bowser Jr.

Due to nostalgia and favoritism towards the Nintendo GameCube, Double Dash is my favorite installment in the Mario Kart franchise. Due to nostalgia and favoritism towards the Nintendo GameCube, Double Dash is my favorite installment in the Mario Kart franchise. The addition of the "team" game play makes for a very enjoyable game. As annoying as special items can be, they add an extra edge to the game that I would love to see again. There is not a single course in this game I dislike. I would enjoy more courses, but it is an early installment. The drastic graphical improvement on this game compared to the N64 is outstanding and is truly immersive. Although there is no story, it is a fun experience to be played with friends. I have had multiple long nights with friends playing this game, and creating our own variations (beerio kart, ice cream olympics). The battle modes are also fun, with some great maps. Would recommend to anyone who loves having a good time with friends. This game is for casual as well as serious gamers. From the time I first picked up this game when 50cc was difficult, to now when I have completed the game and am constantly trying to beat my old time trial time, I have never lost a love for this game.
