Surprised/Let Down/As Expected: Surprised
Favorite Mechanic or Narrative Moment: The world of BABBDI is both unsettling and comforting at the same time. The brutal architecture, the grimy textures, and the inhuman voices all come together to make this city feel weirdly alive. I think a lot of it comes down to how explorable everything is - you can go basically anywhere that you can see, and almost all of the buildings can even be entered. You may not know where you're going or what you're doing, but in BABBDI just walking around and seeing what you stumble upon is practically all of the fun.
Least Favorite Thing: At the end of the day, there isn't much in the way of objectives, which makes the game not much more than an hour or two jaunt to see some stuff until you get bored. I think this is fine for what the game is, but it is does make the whole thing undeniably ephemeral (maybe a good thing?)
Babbdi is the sort of game that has no right to stick with you, but it does. It's a short experience with a simple goal that you'll definitely put off in favor of exploration. You can explore the whole map in under an hour but it is still fulfilling. It's creepy but not dangerous. You're safe, and that is almost even more unsettling because the lack of danger is strange in what seems like such a dangerous place. One character even tells you that you can jump from high places- that it won't hurt. And it's true, you can hurdle from the highest part of the map and be completely fine. It's an incredibly well done chilling atmosphere that I think is worth experiencing for people who like liminal spaces, exploration, and/or spooky stuff. It's free >:) play it >:)
