When I started playing Puzzle Kingdoms I had no intention of finishing it. When I finished it I garnered no satisfaction from doing so. As the final cutscene began to play, I was already elsewhere; tidying up the house and pouring a glass of wine. I returned to see the credits play; a sound error had resulted in the sound effects of matching symbols and clashing swords drowning out the music. Ultimately I enjoyed Puzzle Kingdoms. I found the gameplay loop satisfying and wasn’t bothered by the incredibly cheap presentation. The RPG elements were a nice touch, but were mostly pointless except to increase replay value. I played the console version, though it was clearly a portable game at heart. I really don’t know why I took the time to finish it. I need to go wash the dishes and wrap some Christmas presents.
A spin-off to the Puzzle Quest games. With a different dev team behind this, along with PQ2, the charm that lifted the first game has been absent in here as well. The plot starts out all right and the strategic elements in this puzzle-driven add to the existing PQ platform. On the other hand, the outcome of challenging battles do often get affected by the RnG factor and will have you spend more time to get through scenarios than necessary due to bad luck with match-3 puzzle generation. As a backlogger, I find this factor based on luck taking more time and fun away more than I believe this game is worth.
