EDIT FROM THE FUTURE: After letting it rest in the back of my mind for a while, I've come to the conclusion that I was a bit to nice on this review. I think most of my points still stand, but this collection was not as good as previous ones. I'm dropping my score from 3 to 2 stars.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

Third volume of indie games made in 10 days or less. This time they all follow the same theme of “cute horror”, something interesting in theory, but, unfortunately, it seems that many of the developers did not know how to implement this theme, so some of these games aren't horror games at all.

Despite this, the collection still offers a good amount of interesting experiences.

Starting with the good:

  • "The castle": I'm talking about the hub world that contains the games themselves. Similar to previous installments, we have to solve certain puzzles to progress the story and gain access to the games. The story didn't seem particularly interesting to me, but I liked exploring the map.
  • SATO WONDERLAND: If there is something that completely saves this collection is this game. Creative gameplay, disturbing themes, a good story …

Creative gameplay, disturbing themes, a good story and even some scary moments. One of my favorites of the collection.
  • REACTOR: Definitely another game a few levels above the rest, having a very polished presentation (for a game made in less than two weeks). Similar to the others, it's not exactly a scary game, but it does have some tense moments.
  • SPOOKWARE @ The Video Store: Challenging and fun. It can be a bit frustrating, but it is helped by its short length and good variability of mini-games. I think it's the game with the best presentation of the pack, I would even go as far as to say it looks like it was made by professionals.
  • Submission: Creative and entertaining, it even has some scary moments. It's somewhat slow to progress, so it might become a bit tedious for some people.
  • Disparity of the Dead: An okay platformer, but I liked the world and the story it presents. It also has my favorite ending in the entire collection.

The okay ones:

  • EDEN: Garden of the Faultless: This one has the least conventional gameplay of the pack. We must “breed” biblical angels to win races. Personally, I don't have strong opinions about it, it's interesting but slow to progress.
  • Bubbo: Adventure on Geralds Island: Retro-looking platformer, with just a little bit of horror. It's ok, nothing out of this world, but it really didn't have to be, right?.
  • Chip's Tips: Made by a recurring developer in these collections, his previous works always have a strong aesthetic direction, but are very tedious to play. This one is basically the same, but it's somehow winning me over. Simple gameplay and easy puzzles. It does have a certain charm to it, but I can see this being the most hated one of the collection.

And lastly, the not so good: I don't want to say bad because I can see potential, but it seems they were lacking in others aspects, like they were short on time or experience, maybe.

  • Soul Waste: It is just not fun to play. It explains very little of the main objective and has a graphic style that makes it very difficult to see where you are going. It is also at odds with itself, presenting combat that rewards speed, but platforming that requires slow precision.
  • Bete Grise: Similar to so many other games that tend to appear in these collections, it has good ideas and a strong aesthetic, but not the best implementation. It consists of doing maintenance work in the form of mini-games, but there are only 3, and they are repeated several times, quickly becoming repetitive.
  • Matter OVER Mind: Good graphics, but a ton of tech issues. Because of this, the gameplay that is supposed to be simple to play and easy to understand, becomes unnecessarily difficult, never allowing the game to reach its true potential.
  • Nice Screams at Funfair: Probably the game that suffers the most from lack of development time. Very tedious and difficult, but this difficulty doesn't feel natural, it feels more like the product of bugs. That said, I liked the soundtrack.

In the end, this is the first collection in which I really felt the negative impact of the short development time. I know it goes against the spirit of these collections, but I think they should have released some post-release patches to iron out certain flaws.

Overall, still some interesting experiences, even some great ones I'd say, but the tech problems, leads me to believe that this is the weakest collection so far.
