Generic decent and difficult

I played this on my iPhone with Backbone One. It worked well and is a decent example of what you get with a Backbone. It’s a fun enough platformer with no story to bother with.

If this came out in 1990, it would be the start of a beloved franchise. As it is, it’s difficult with lots short levels that reward exploration but otherwise bland and does little beyond mechanics to provide any joy. I couldn’t get past level 6-8 and decided I didn’t care enough to keep trying. Still, I got a year of jumping/stabbing fun while on the toilet for $5.

"We have games at home". Games at home:

Got this because it was on sale and really cheap. It looked like a fun little indie game, so I decided to give it a shot. I hate to sound mean but this game is really generic. It might as well be called "Videogame: the game". Everything is just kind of there... very uninspired, without any charm or ideas to call its own. Simplistic to a fault. The names of the locations are so bland it almost feels like no creativity went into them. It looks like a game a friend of yours could have made in an afternoon using some user-friendly game creation software (the free version). It's kind of like a mobile game.

None of this would be an issue if I could get though the game in two or three hours and call it a day, which would make me go much easier on it. However, out of curiosity I looked it up on How long to beat (I'm always using that site) and saw it's at least 7+ hours to beat. Talk about overstaying its welcome.

I'm going to go to bat for this game. I played it on the Switch and the mechanics work so much better than a lot of retro inspired games that I've tried. There is a decent amount of challenge to exploring the bite-sized levels. The challenges are all fair. The levels are small enough that it doesn't feel like a burden to explore them for hidden items. There are a lot of unlockable power-ups to customize your play style. You can focus on speed, power, or magic. It doesn't change the world but there aren't any glaring flaws. I enjoyed it enough to finish the game and search for all of the collectables.

I saw this described as a relatively easy metroidvania somewhere and it reminded me how much I suck at video games.
