Environmental Storytelling Could Be Better

Gameplay, art, sound are OK for a short, simple point-and-click affair. The humourous captions for objects in the environment and that particular cat animation are enjoyable. Dave, the protagonist, cuts a symapthetic profile at the beginning, but begins to grate towards the end. The last third or so of the game feels thin and rushed.

Environmental storytelling being an important aspect of this game, it is disappointing how underdeveloped that is for characters other than Dave. For one, there does not seem to be any cat toys or scratching posts in the house for Nugget. Environmental storytelling being an important aspect of this game, it is disappointing how underdeveloped that is for characters other than Dave. For one, there does not seem to be any cat toys or scratching posts in the house for Nugget. With regard to Carla, the environment does not manage to clearly establish something as basic as whether she lives in that house.

For instance, while these do not necessarily signal co-habitation, a photo of the couple and a painting, which Dave claims was made by Carla, garnish the wall in the hallway. Carla spends enough time in the house to warrant having a user account on the computer in the bedroom and keeping a makeup bag under the bathroom sink. Despite Dave's claims that he cooks little, the kitchen is equipped with cooking utensils and ingredients, suggesting the presence of someone else in the household who does cook more often. On the other hand, no clothing or accessories specific to Clara are visible in the house. There is no hint that any of the objects stowed in the basement, books, or decor items belong to her (most of the belongings seem to align more with Dave's personality and preoccupations, though this is not made explicit). According to Dave, Carla paints, yet no trace of painting or digital art paraphernalia is seen. Although Carla encountered trouble at the airport due to crafting tools she carried, once again there are no signs of such activity in the house. In the bedroom, the bed has only one pillow and is pushed up against the wall.

Is this ambiguity deliberate? Maybe Carla does not live in the house, but then why is she the only one to know how to operate the washer? Why would Dave's house be her first stop after deplaning?
