giopep's review of Another World/Flashback

After starting it and giving up back in the day, I finally played through Flashback. Back then, I hoped it was a new Another World but it wasn't and I guess I was disappointed. It's not completely my fault, considering it comes from the same studio (but, crucially, not the same designer) and it "steals" the approach to graphics and narration, even though it's stylistically so much worse. Plus, honestly, the first level kinda tries to evoke Another World's vibe, failing miserably. Also, it's a really weak level, even for Flashback's standards. After that though, the game opens up, shows you its arcade/adventure structure (which has much more Prince of Persia vibes, so it's probably better for you if you don't like Another World's "cinematic" approach) and really flourishes. The narration is a bizarre mix of They Live, Total Recall, The Running Man and who knows what else but it works fine, the action is a bit clunky by today standards but it's challenging and satisfying, a couple of levels are visually quite good (Earth is the best one, I think). Overall it's a really good game. The Switch version has a lot of options to "modernize" it but you …
