At times, it’s an edge-of your seat experience that gives you a sense of accomplishment for sliding across the finish line in one piece. Other times, it’s a confounding mix of erratic handling, insane difficulty and drab repetition. With the wealth of tweaking options, the high learning curve, and the dominating AI, Baja: Edge of Control is a game that only hardcore fans can truly sink their teeth into.
I liked this game at first. With its mostly arcade-style off-road racing and energetic rock songs in the soundtrack it looked like a budget version of the OG Motorstorm. And it is in fact. But the more I played the harder that lower budget hit the game. After a while I realized that all vehicles basically feel the same and driving physics while being mostly fine got frustrating at times. Despite Baja's nice variety of racing tracks the game started being very monotonous and grindy. As I said, cars feel the same, so while progressing through the career mode you drive basically the same one car, which only looks different. And the progression itself.. it's just not exciting: playing a bunch of 4-5-6 race series' and thus getting money to purchase a new type of car, which feels the same - that was a very unrewarding experience. After 4 hours I gave up.
However, I've got to say, if you have this game (its HD-updated version is out on modern systems btw), you have got to try the ridiculously fun hill climb game mode. Those races when you climb what looks like vertical surfaces and then go down - this …

Those races when you climb what looks like vertical surfaces and then go down - this is what I will surely remember about Baja: Edge of Control.
P.S. I remember reading something about this game being in some kind of rivalry with another Baja-centered game - SCORE International Baja 1000. I finished it a few years ago and, though I don't remember it too well, I can definitely say I enjoyed it quite a lot. It is a more obvious attempt at making a Motorstorm-like game. Also, it is only around 5 hours long, so it was over for me before I got tired of it. Check it out if you have a chance and like Motorstorm 1.
