Preliminary: Hmmm, peculiarly it seems it was first released on Game Gear. The Game Gear Look is amazing, can't believe it was handheld in 91. But JoeyPajamas mentioned the movement is slow, which always drives me nuts in platformers.
Welp Stage 1 is already cleared. It must be the SMS system in which they move slowly, cuz my character moved quite quickly. I'm a bit confused. When I picked the green duck, it was a different first level than the blue duck (ah, got it, that's a level select screen of characters I'm saving, not whom I'm playing)
Day 1
As always, I like that you have a weapon to fight back, there are power-ups/collectibles, and that you can also jump on enemies to damage them. The level design is pretty good so far, a bit heavy on the gotcha design but not bad. The music is good considering it's a handheld game, and especially the Look is impressing me for a handheld console.
It's quite forgiving with how you can hit behind and front when swiping the hammer. Not so forgiving in the water tho :-p no weapon. Makes sense as a punishment for falling but it seems some …

It was fun trying to make far jumps by timing my jump to land on enemies. Too bad you can't go backward, I always hate that in platformers, so unnecessary. I'm glad the GG version doesn't have a timer tho, so I could plan out fun platforming bits. The Look continues to be a highlight I love the colors
It seems like the extra lives are very abundant as long as you try to get up high in each level? Assuming that's what the collectibles with Donald's face is.
Nice, one of the power-ups gave me a projectile weapon! I always love that. Welp, another boss done, both the bosses' mechanics were very innocuous so far. But I should bite my tongue :-p I'm thinking one more level for tonight then some Runescape.
The third stage's music sounds a lot like a Mario song :-p It's definitely getting harder, thank goodness for my projectile weapon. I like the colors of this stage tho
I sure am a sucker for platformers. I drop a technically good game like Rent A Hero and say I need to play my OSRS Ironman, decide to just peek at this simple kid-friendly handheld platformer, and play through 3 of the 7 levels smh haha. (And felt this irresistible urge to play through those levels. It's like this drive that comes over me like with RPGs too)
More and more tho I'm noticing a bit of delay in the attack, and the way you can't collect certain/all? collectibles while they're still falling to the ground (why tho). Lots of little features like that that bog it down/make it feel slow like the reviews said. I will probly still play through all 7 levels cuz, well, me, but it will struggle to get above a 4 star and that's assuming the Look and Sound keep being remarkable.
Well, one other remarkable thing, that's boosting the Play, is that you can hit away most/all enemy projectiles, including jumping on them. Lord knows I love jumping on enemies and their projectiles, makes for some fun series of jumps and getaways! Hopefully the level design continues to bring that feature up.
Welp, the first 3 stages are done and niblings saved. Time for a new area, which is best saved for tomorrow <3
Day 2
Lol I just now realized, on the 6th stage, that this is the earth for level select >.< The African level has a [predictable] but good tune.
I'm having way more fun than I care to admit :-p Lots of fun platforming segments. I guess platformers are just my thing. It's not amazing or anything, but it's good ol platformer fun. I do wish it rewarded rushing through levels more heh, gotcha's get ya, but can't blame em. The Antarctica level in particular is tacky with the gotchas, esp with how it scrolls differently.
As easy as the boss fights keep being, I guess I like that cuz it makes me feel good at a game :) Always a positive for me. The final level is quite hard so far tho, mostly due to new enemies/mechanics (seems to be new enemies in every level, which is always a nice touch). Plus I like this new tune.
The collision masks of these spikes on the final level are quite mediocre and frustrating, but it's a handheld game. And this is the first time collision masks felt meh. To top it off, it was a pretty fun puzzle to figure out.
I dig this final boss sprite! I don't know much about the Donald Duck universe, so I figure this character is well-known but I like it!
Oh dang the boss fell quickly lol. Cute, innocuous ending too
Look: 8.5/10 Great colors. Very impressive for a handheld game, to boot.
Sound: 8.5/10 Great tunes. Really an 8/10 but boosted a bit for being handheld with such a variety of tunes and good jams.
Play: 8.5/10 Some flaws for sure, but top-notch for a handheld platformer and great fun in general.
Feel: 8.5/10
Attachment: 8.5/10 Certainly a platformer I will return to! Can't believe this managed a 5 star, it's so innocuous heh, but I suppose I do love innocuous fun platformers! Plus I kept putting off other things to play it so that says something :-p
Overall: 8.5/10
Completion: Main Story
Playtime: ~1 hour
