Now, with finally finishing the game I can confidently say that it trains your patience. I wouldn't recommend it to everyone, but the people that like metroidvanias will like it. Hear me out - You Will Not Finish The Game In One Sitting; be prepared to do chores and take notes. The sense of accomplishment that comes with unlocking new parts of the house and completing a puzzle makes me feel the same way and older person feels when they get a new-improved vacuum. Wit a lot of notes comes a lot of complaints, while I love the game a few things make me mad. Firstly the game took me 10 days to get into it enough to make me want to complete it, to me it seems like too long from a retention standpoint. A lot of items look like you can interact with them and a lot of interactible items blend in to the surrounding (which is fun sometimes, but in the long run turns into a chore).

I would have liked it if some items changed colour when you hover above them or some similar indicator was given, but otherwise the puzzles were fine and completing the game was great.

I finished the main objective and I'm pretty happy with that right now. I know there are lots lots more mysteries to uncover but I also know it'll take me a loooong time to make any progress going forward. I'll probably do a few more runs here and there but I have no illusions about 'completing' the game ever. I cannot even fathom how frustrating that'll get. Also my note-taking is all over the place, so I will not be able to decipher what any of that means after some time has passed (that's my own fault though, hot tip: do better than me).

It was a really cool gaming experience and I would recommend the game to anyone who likes puzzles AND has a lot of patience and a high capacity to tolerate frustration. Due to the RNG aspect, the game builds up your frustration and annoyance, so I think it's best to recognize that and stop playing once you reach a certain threshold (this will be different for every player).

If you're a completionist: be warned.

Another annoying thing: There is absolutely no reason to not be able to save and quit mid day and load back in. This is such a great game to just play for a little bit, but you have to commit to at least a whole day run whenever you start the game, which will keep me from turning on the game in the future.

A very interesting game that had contributed to the industry with innovative ideas. Moreover, I loved the story and the fact that it is shown more than told, and so the player has to put the pieces together. But man, it should have finished after 30-40 hours top.

Combining a puzzle game and a roguelike is exciting; randomness invites a pleasing paranoia, where one looks for patterns not merely in the details of its rooms, but across runs. But while the game is extremely mysterious, it's not particularly puzzling. There are very few aha! moments where you work something out. The main thrust of the game is simply cataloguing the information it gives you then using it, figurative keys to collect as well as the literal ones. There is much more to it, but despite lots of threads still dangling after the credits, it didn't compel me to dig into its deeper mysteries.

This game is firmly not for everyone. It's a first person, roguelite, puzzle exploration game (which honestly sells the game short of how unique it is). It makes calls to classic point and click adventure games, like Myst. It feels like a very convoluted escape room. It requires you to obsess over details, because more times than not, those little details are actually clues for a puzzle/s you may not encounter for hours. Sometimes even longer. Since there are so many details and often multiple details that layer across multiple rooms, you will 100% need a notepad and take thorough notes. I ended my playthrough with 8 pages of notes. A decent amount of these ended up being useful. I didn't solve every mystery, but I did reach room 46 (at roughly 24ish hours). Yet I feel I have only scratched the surface of the secrets this game has to offer.

The game has its issues that a decent amount of gamers will find frustrating. The RNG is the name of the game and you can have a scenario/puzzle solution in your head but will need to wait 5+ hours until the RNG lines up just right for you to try a puzzle solution. Other times you may be close to room 46, but get screwed by the RNG. That's an issue with most Roguelites, but I was more than willing to put up with this issue for the next big discovery or progression. Early game you will be flooded with progression and you unlock secrets, but you can and probably will hit a long stretch of stagnation where for hours (in my case roughly 5+ hours) you will likely not discover something new or progress your home. Still, that moment when a new puzzle either presents itself or a solution clicks in place is immensely satisfying. I'm intentionally being coy with the puzzles and solutions because this game is best experienced as blind as possible.

While I do view this game as having a flaw around its RNG which can lead to frustration, it's such a unique and well realized vision that it's an easy recommend for me. It's something that would be fun to play with friends while they watch. I had a friend swing by while I was on a run and they were immediately absorbed by the game. But if you don't like puzzle games nor Roguelites you likely will not enjoy this as much as me. The game does a great job of making you feel smart. But at the same time, it's designed in such a way that you will likely concoct conspiracy theories around puzzles. Not a bad thing in my book. Especially with how often the game rewards you for being observational and thinking outside the box.

Any Game Can Be a Multiplayer Game When Multiple People Are Playing It

I pretty much never play the hot new game while the hype train is still in motion. I've not touched Clair Obscur or Metaphor: ReFantazio or Tears of the Kingdom. By the time I got to Elden Ring they'd already announced Shadow of the Erdtree, by the time I got to Cyberpunk 2077 it wasn't even the same game everyone else had played, and by the time I got to Pong we already had other video games. And of course insert obligatory joke about how I'm still in Act III of Baldur's Gate 3.

When I saw people talking about Blue Prince I thought, "Seems interesting, I'll probably get to it in a year or two." But then a couple of coworkers mentioned they were playing, and, and here's I think the key factor, that it was free on PS Plus. I figured might as well download and poke around a bit—and I was immediately hooked.

Probably the number one driver of success for a roguelike, at least for me, is the pace of discovery. Mechanically, this would be, e.g., how often do you unlock a new mechanic or encounter new types of challenges or discover new synergies? Narratively, this would be how long do you have to go before the next main story beat, how often do you find/progress the side stories and lore?

Blue Prince has an almost intoxicating pace of discovery. Unless you are incredibly unlucky (or, I guess, incredibly bad at the game) it will be difficult for you to go an in-game day without finding something new, be it a room you've never drafted before, an item you've never picked up before, a new clue to the story, or a new piece of one of the many puzzles. I've rolled credits on the game and I'm still reasonably confident that if I do another run I will get all of these and more.

And at the start of the game, while you're still figuring stuff out, that discovery is absolutely enough to keep you going. Once you actually have some idea of what you're supposed to be doing though, that's when you might start to get frustrated. If you've seen any of the discourse surrounding this game you know that much has been made of such an intricate puzzle game relying so much on RNG. And it's true that the RNG can be very frustrating once you start to have specific goals you're trying to accomplish (for example, trying to get the Magnifying Glass into the Darkroom which took me like 5 runs at least).

There are, however, ways to mitigate this. One is to not get too hung up on any one goal but have several you can pursue at any given time, and just go for the one the house seems to lend itself to that day (by the way, when the game tells you to take notes, TAKE NOTES. TAKE NOTES ABOUT EVERYTHING. Also I'm gonna save you some heartache and tell you to screenshot any sheet music you happen to find; you'll thank me later.)

There are also often multiple different ways to find the same clue. For example, if you're trying to figure out how the dart board puzzle works, I can think of at least 3 different places (maybe 4?) that either give hints or outright explain it. There are even multiple ways to access certain key areas (and for one of these areas 2 of those ways can be unlocked permanently which is helpful because blocking off the 3rd way lets you do something very useful).

There are also various items, upgrades, and effects throughout the game that can help to reduce or exert some control over the RNG, from being able to choose the color of the next room you draft to being able to rotate the directions of the doors to being able to carry items from one day to the next (or even store them for some future day that may not be the next even if you want it to be.)

Hopefully, for future players, these will be enough. But there's one thing that I found to be the most effective at mitigating RNG frustration, and you can only get it when other people are also playing the game. I call it "talking about the game we're all playing," and it's great. There were so many days I would be feeling frustrated by something in the game and then I'd come into work and start talking to my coworkers about all the new things we'd found it, and got me so excited about the game I didn't feel at all frustrated anymore and I just wanted to jump back into it. Most of the time we weren't even giving each other explicit information, it was usually just, "Did you figure out the thing in the Drawing Room?" or "Have you found the Workshop yet?" or "What the hell is up with all of these chess pieces?" (we still have no idea what is up with all the chess pieces.) At most we might give little hints about "Oh, if you're stuck on that you need to draft this room and you'll figure it out," but usually just knowing there was something one person had found and the other person hadn't, or something we'd both found but hadn't figured out the larger implications of, was enough to get us excited (indeed, is enough; after I rolled credits I talked to my other coworker who was the first to do so and I was fully prepared to be like, "anyway I think I'm probably done with it," but the conversation ended up convincing both of us to get back to it.) I finally got what I've been missing out on every time a new game dominates the conversation, and I can't think of a better game for me to get it with than this one.

So, if my biggest recommendation for this game is to take notes, my second biggest is to find someone you know who hasn't played it yet and get them to play it too. Games are more fun with more people—who knew?

p.s. To date I have only looked up one thing in this game, and only because I'd actually already solved but the way I thought I solved it wasn't working. Turns out I'd solved it a completely different way (which is to say, the only way) by accident and without noticing. There's probably at least one clue to every puzzle somewhere, so I'd avoid looking things up if you can and just go exploring. Also the Magnifying Glass is probably the most important item in the game.

p.p.s. It took me I think at least 2 days to figure out there's a sprint button.

p.p.p.s. I'm not gonna give any more advice on how to play because there are literally multiple in-game books that give advice on how to play.

Trigg & Gusset’s OST for this game did stood out to me (I listen to their music for quite a while already) and without it the game would’ve felt completely flat, with just one unique idea that I didn't really like. Glad I played it through Game Pass and didn’t actually buy it. Just another reminder that I should probably stop paying much attention to Metacritic scores.

Day 22 - MADE IT INTO ROOM 46! Roll Credits.

What a fun game that makes me feel absolutely stupid... I know there's so much I still haven't uncovered. luckily I can continue playing and finding more secrets.

But yeah, this game sucked me in and didn't let go until I managed to solve the mystery of Room 46 (and stumble across many more mysteries along the way). It's clever, and hides so much in plain sight in some really ingenious ways.

The music also does a lot of the emotional heavy lifting, and even though I'm still fuzzy on some of the story details it feels impactful.

Great game if you want to challenge yourself, your observation skills, memory, and note-taking skills. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going back to the St. Holly Manor. Maybe this run I can power up that darn arcade or find more microchips or open the vault...

My most anticipated game of the year was the Golden Idol sequel. I mention this to say that I'm coming up on 20 hours in Blue Prince and I really do not understand the 9/10, 10/10 scores. It's fine. It's a good game. It's a solid 6.5 or 7 out of 10. But to me it's a beautiful idea done in the most tedious manner possible. I leave every session, having hit a wall of RNG, either bored, annoyed or both.

What am I missing?

This game is brilliant, but the RNG-ness of it is going to be the equivalent of the ship controls in Outer Wilds; certain people will just bounce right off this because of this specific design decision of the game.
