The latest issue of Bullet Points has a great essay on thematic similarities between Pinocchio and Baby Steps by Willa Bloomfield-Rowe, which is probably one of my favourite pieces of writing on it so far. Bloomfield-Rowe's been teasing a piece on it for a while and I'm happy to finally read it.

The collage of surrral skits that form the narrative are funny, disarming, and, by the end, genuinely touching. I particularly love this game's gently viscous portrayal of its protagonist, a socially maladapted fat guy. In other words, the median gamer. I was only mildly grazed by that representation, but then the game goaded me into a ridiculous, pointless challenge, then mocked me for persisting with it. I did the Manbreaker. I could've taken the stairs at any point, but ego stopped me. It didn't break me, it revealed I was already broken. What a game.

Silksong has nothing on Baby Steps. I’ve never felt so exhausted after an hour of playing a game. This is the real hard game of 2025.
