Had my eye on this game for a while primarily because it's a rhythm game and I'm always down for a rhythm game with some style. However, this is notably from the same developers as "Needy Streamer Overload", a game I had quite a few issues with in regards to how it commented on the things it did surrounding Otaku Culture and mental health issues.

Immediately upon starting the demo, it's very easy to tell they're more or less going with a similar sort of vibe of dark undertones hidden underneath the very bright and animated pastel colors. Though Yunyun likely covers a more relatable issue in that the protagonist, Qtie, is a NEET otaku relying on her mom and struggling to become a proper adult, with the father, although mentioned numerous times, is entirely missing. In what I can only assume is a result of her mental state, Qtie's favorite anime character with whom she has an obsession with comes to life on her computer and by transmitting denpa songs directly to her brain, encourages her to fill the internet with her incessant conspiracy shitposting. I don't think I'll go into much more detail than that.

As for the rhythm game itself, its honestly a quite fun 4-key game. The real kicker though is that the entire selection of songs in the demo, and in the full release afaik, are entirely from the very specific time period of the late 2000s early 2010s. Primarily from the time when NicoNico Douga practically exploded and ingrained itself deeply into otaku culture. A time where all sorts of people were uploading covers of anime songs, creating denpa music, and Touhou fan videos/songs were a dime a dozen. Qtie is voiced by Nanahira who was a prominent cover song uploader on NicoNico during its time and eventually the most recognizable face (or voice) of denpa music. While playing I was wondering if the Nanahira truck video was still up on NicoNico and I found it quite easily. Man... 2009, huh? This was an era I was very much a part of during my late middle school/early high school years for better or for worse. Playing through these songs was incredibly nostalgic and I was very much surprised by how easily I was able to recognize the songs from KOTOKO that were from VN's from this time period as well, songs I hadn't heard in practically over a decade. At the same time though, a part of me was absolutely cringing at just how much I recognized and how it all spoke to me. Lord knows how I ended up a mostly well off person with normal friends.

ANYWAY, I quite enjoyed the demo. It was certainly quite a trip through memory lane and I'm looking forward to the full release and its selection of songs. As for the "story" aspect of the game, that remains to be seen as to whether it'll be handled well. I do think there's is something interesting going on and Qtie is likeable enough that I hope she resolves her issues over the course of the game and nothing awful happens haha.
