Monster Smash is a side view single screen platformer where your task is to capture all the monsters that are partying around the local graveyard. The screen has four rows of platforms containing four gravestones on three of the levels and part of the platforms can be turned 90°. The partying monsters appear from the top and left of the screen and move to the right of the screen along the platforms. Pressing the fire button makes the gravestones move up and down and when a monster hits a gravestone then they are captured. If the monster hits the other side of the screen then they have escaped and let too many escape, shown by a gauge, then it is game over. Once a certain amount of monsters have been captured then you move to the next level. Before you start the game you can select the level number from one to nine. Less

Fast-Paced And Fun (For A Little While)
This review is for the Apple II version

Look: 8/10 Love the Halloween-y theme/setting, reminds me of the seasonal "Pumpkin Patch" near me's aesthetic. enter image description here

The Halloween vibe was well-executed in the level design, too! enter image description here

Play: 8/10 Always grateful for home games to give instructions in-game like arcade games often did in this era enter image description here

I mean, I was god awful at the game--it's sorta like a puzzle-action game? Like the contemporaneous Lemmings game, sorta, but instead you're trying to mash/smash (depending on the version, I played the technically-'83 "Smash" version) monsters, indeed. But most importantly, I had fun exploring it, playing it, failing at it ha. I did get past a few waves at least, tho. Heh.. Still, it got old after a bit, especially once I knew the basic pattern/idea (open the gates to get as many Monsters as possible in the little hallway areas, then close them to trap them in the hallways so you can mash away-. As one reviewer said, once you get the basic idea down, it's not so much a puzzle-action/strategy-action challenge of timing and recognizing complex puzzle pattners etc (thankfully, for bad gamers like me, the monsters' collision masks are very forgiving so it's easy to smash em even when …

Feel: 8/10 I was glad to see an Action game come up, it felt like '82 was one text adventure after another for home computers! Makes sense, considering their limitations. Anyway, I did reallly reallllly like the Halloween feel, the gameplay concept was well-executed, and I had fun playing it. A unique, memorable game for sure.

Attachment: 7/10 While I definitely wont forget this clever, unique, Halloween-y game, it's not one I see myself playing for fun regularly. Definitely one I might show others, especially during the fall!
