At what point does a cheaply made game become magically fun? Monster Attack, the first in the Earth Defense Force series, manages this in spades.
The controls are surprisingly simple and easy to grasp, even if the vehicles are a bit floaty. The objective is always quickly found and focused; just kill all of the evil ants and UFOs with weapons at your disposal. Using the weapons isn't limiting, mostly due to the crazy nature of rapid firing a missile launcher and mowing down giant ants with bullets.
The graphics? Wonderfully basic and the frame rate takes hits, but the people behind this game pulled through anyways and ironically came up with some of the most impressive view distance and destructibility for the time, if not at the cost of smoothness.
Is that the point though? Nope! Monster Attack understands this and lets you blow up what you want with gleeful abandon. Regardless of how it sounds or looks, it's good ol' (co-op inclusive!) fun. Give it a shot! It's quick and is probably cheaper than dirt these days.
