So , I actually did play one of Tripwires older titles: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad I don't remember much liking it (I played the single player campaign)
But this one? I dislike it for an entierly differnt reason.... There is no way I can stay alive for more tahn a few seconds. I've never even seen another enemy and have no idea where they might be hiding or how far away (I assume snipers) This insta-'get-gud' design makes it impossible to practice or learn how it works.
I had hoped to enjoy this as the demo trailer for it looks amazing, ny experience of the game was absolutely nothing like it. There was next to no violence at all that I can reacall as I would simply go down in the fight and see nothing else going on. After an hour, I got tired of this and decided to play more Counter-Strike 2 instead.
RS2:V is squad-based FPS taking place in sizeable maps with up to 64 players. It's not a bad game, everything works reasonably well. It's just... boring.
There are no combat vehicles. You have a limited selection of weapons with few modification options. It's almost impossible to actually get the special role/class you want. You die almost instantly. Most of the time you crouch around as a grunt with a basic M16, hoping some MG or sniper won't kill you long before you spot them.
This game just lacks the action and variation of Battlefield. BF is also more forgiving, even if you aren't very good you can still contribute. Here you just cost your team tickets.
If you can get your head around the concept that you are just a regular soldier… then you’ll find an incredibly unique experience in Rising Storm 2: Vietnam.
Booted this up for the first time yesterday on PC. Forgot it was a free game on the epic store many months ago!
I'm sad that it's taken me this long to discover the rising storm / red orchestra franchise, Vietnam is a great game and still active today.
Love the mechanics, the balance between realism and all out action. It's a perfect mix of the more simulation heavy titles like hell let loose, squad, and the casual action focused shooters like battlefield, medal of honor.
There's a heavy emphasis on squads, team play, Commanders, and classes which is great. Uniquely though there is a lot of opportunity for chaos amongst the strategy. Enemy traps, tunnels, napalm strikes, artillery, helicopters, RPGs, smoke.
As with all good war games I feel that rising storm 2 treats the subject matter with a certain level of respect (well about as much respect as you can with a game about war) mainly in the form of its realistic tone and mechanics. Uniform customisation seems to be historically accurate too which is nice.
Love the menu music too, nothing paints a better picture of the stylised Vietnam War than a Creedence Clear Water Revival song!
This is free in the Epic store (again) this week:
This is free now on the Epic Store.
