Mega Man X: Command Mission, known as Rockman X Command Mission in Japan, is a spin-off game in the Mega Man X series. It was released in 2004 on both the PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo GameCube, making it the second-to-last game in the Mega Man X series to be released. Unique to the series, it is an RPG featuring turn-based combat and an extensive story. The Gamecube version let's you link up to Game Boy Advance so you can use the GBA as a treasure hunter locater. The PS2 version contains a Mega Man X8 Demo. Less

The greatest game of all time (for me)

This game has aesthetic, narrative and gameplay systems that unironically compete with modern games.

Seriously: play this game.

Kinetic movement in a turn based game that has yet to be matched, the little rocket jump is so satisfying.

The combat uses a kinetic system without menus, and an ultimate system that is both thematic and draws on elements of each character: poker for the card flinger, button mashing for megaman, fighting game combos for zero.

The progress hooks are just too good; having entirely new character designs and ultimates alongside weapons that all have models is crazy; it builds up a loop that really feels nice to engage with.

A soundtrack that any megaman fan would expect.

I played this as a kid and adult and both times I found myself pulled in.

No joke, this game unironically has excellent fundamental mechanics and a great battle system. It's a shame that it never got a chance to have its quirks ironed out. I started playing just for something to do while watching TV, as I lost my previous post-game save file, but I'm sucked in all over again.

Pros

  • I like X's design in this game.
  • I think they did a pretty good job intregrating Mega Man X elements into a JRPG with the subtanks and how subweapons and weapon energy works.
Cons
  • Encounter rate is really high.
  • The last 2-3 chapters are really long and tedious. Especially chapter 9, the way to unlock doors in that chapter is just annoying and unenjoyable. It honestly felt like they wanted to increase the amount of battles you'd have to inflate the game time.
  • I wish KOed party members would get automatically subbed out. That might be asking for a bit much, but losing a party member is a bit rough.
  • Random enemies are stupid strong and tanky for no reason. Nameless enemies can sometimes do half your health in a single attack. Tanky enemies add to the frustration because of how high the encounter rate is. So not only are there going to be a lot of random battles, they're going to be arduous.
  • The way they implemented retries is a nice gesture, but it wasn't done very well. Retries take you to the beginning of the battle, which sucks since you can't change equipment mid-battle, so if you …

  • The way they implemented retries is a nice gesture, but it wasn't done very well. Retries take you to the beginning of the battle, which sucks since you can't change equipment mid-battle, so if you just have bad weapons or force medals for the enemy you are fighting, you just have to deal with it. This system also made it possible to soft lock yourself into an unwinnable situation for the final boss, forcing you to have to restart and redo the boss battle before the final boss.
Final Thoughts
The more I played the game, the less I enjoyed it. I can't really comment on the story because I'm picking it back up after a hiatus of over a year. There's a ton of extra content that I'm not going to see because this game requires doing side missions to get keys to unlock doors when you revisit areas. Since I wasn't too into the main game, I will not be forcing myself to play more to see the extra stuff.

It's funny, I was looking at my shelf and picked this up. I thought I remembered it more fondly, but then I see only a 3 star review here. Hm. I recall the encounter rate being extremely high, but other than that I recalled liking it. Maybe that was enough to bring it down a star. I'm going to trust past-me on this one, as I barely remember anything from this game.
