It's very cool that a licensed game as fondly remembered as Castle of Illusion was remade over twenty years later at the same company, with the same director involved, and with such lavish production. Even seven years later, this is still a beautiful game.

Production aside, this is a fine platformer. I enjoyed the couple of hours it took me to complete the game, but I don't feel super compelled to replay levels for missing collectibles.

I never played the original Genesis version although I did play Mickey Mania which I thought was great. I feel like this is a pretty good remake and I enjoyed it a lot. The graphics are colorful with lots of nice little animations. Different themes appear in the levels and show much variety. The level design is quite creative with dynamic events occasionally. The music and sound effects compliment it well making it feel truly like an interactive fairy tale. It's definitely on the easy side for most of the game so it feels almost relaxing to play it. There is only a single path through each level but you're never only moving horizontally from left to right but in many directions. I feel like this is almost an ideal game to introduce to a kid as a first video game. As another person mentioned, it was annoying having to sit through the unskippable cut scene before the final boss.
I see the original Genesis game also had a sequel and I would've definitely liked to have seen this dev studio make a remake of it and/or a remake of Quackshot. It's too bad the studio was dissolved.

A modern re-imagining of the 1990 platformer World of Illusion, with a charm and difficulty level rarely found in modern "child-friendly" platformers. Very short, it took me under 5 hours to finish, which wasn't quite enough for me - but the quality is high. It's fun, challenging and addictive, and the style is really cute. A few short-sighted decisions let the game down badly, for example replaying lengthy cutscenes before every attempt on a boss.

Hard to recommend.
Annoying hitboxes/control, good graphics/music. Surprisingly tough.
It left me an impression very similar to Mickey Mania, just not as frustrating.
