JRPG x Survival Horror

Voto: 8.2/10

Been doing a deep dive into the world of retro gaming this year to see all the stuff I missed, especially a lot of PlayStation classics. Some have been awesome, some not so much, but I’m a little over an hour into this one and I can already tell it’s a gem. So unique. Reminds me a bit of something like Resident Evil + 999 (Zero Escape)’s amazingly weird horror pseudoscience vibe but as an actiony-JRPG. Little annoying how precise you have to be interacting with things but I’m really feeling the gameplay and story. Thank god it’s not tank controls! Had to stop for the night but I’m hooked, probably gonna marathon the rest this weekend.

Currently reading the Hideaki Sena novel that inspired this game, knowing nothing about either, with hopes of being inspired to someday check out this out.

Finished this game yesterday. A fun RPG that was really unique for its time. I played this way back when it came out, but I never finished it. I got stuck in the warehouse on day 5.

The game is pretty short, and I finished it with the timer reading 8:40, but I probably spent about 10 hours on a full play through considering that I died a couple times and lost progress. Parts of the game are pretty difficult, but once you spend some time in an area, you end up leveling up to a point where most of the encounters aren't challenging any more. I also got lost a few times trying to find a key that I needed, or push a button to advance to the next area. It can be kind of annoying since sometimes you have to interact with something with pinpoint accuracy in order to trigger the event you need. I would come back to a spot after scouring an area only to find out that I just wasn't pushing X in the exact spot I needed to in order for the game to realize that I was trying to open the drawer that contained the key I needed.

The battles are fun, and quick for the most part. You run around in real time until your gauge fills up, and then you can use a special attack, or attack with one of your weapons. As you level, you do more and take less damage, but player skill also helps you win battles. Positioning is important, and usually you can dodge enemy attacks. I really enjoyed the battles in this game, and I never found myself annoyed that I triggered a battle. Your stats increase when you level up, and you also get bonus points which you can use to increase your inventory capacity, the speed at which your gauge fills up, and the stats on weapons. I spent most of these points upping my inventory capacity, since it was frustrating that I often didn't have enough space to pick up items that I found.

The music is awesome. I didn't know that it was composed by Yoko Shimomura, but it is not surprising considering how enjoyable it was to me. With a lot of newer games I sometimes dislike the fact that there is TOO much music. It can make the tracks less memorable and recognizable, but its not the case with this game. It strikes a nice balance. I enjoyed the story too, and was invested in it throughout the game, even though the game was rather short. I did about 2 floors of the Chrysler Building, the huge 100 floor bonus dungeon that is accessible in New Game+ before I died. There's too many other games I'm itching to play right now, so I'm not sure if I will go through the whole thing. Maybe some other time.
