Wrapping up the endgame stuff now! Fought a fantastic secret boss and made my way through a wicked platforming gauntlet, earning a wildly OP combat ability for my trouble.

This is an odd one. Pretty linear for a metroidvania, with very sparse ability gating. The art direction's so abstract that all the levels kinda blend together, the story's nonsense, and the platforming's functional but fairly stiff. But the combat's so unique that none of those foibles bother me one bit!

Each fight is a weird/wonderful mix of turn-based RPG mechanics and real-time, Devil May Cry-inspired combo juggling. It's a lot to take in, with timed attacks and instant weapon switching and many more novel details. But it all feels rad once it comes together, and I love the game's focus on fewer, more intense fights over the millions of fodder enemies that usually populate metroidvanias. Best of all, every win nets you a new unlock from your skill tree, with no boring "+5% damage" upgrades anywhere in sight.

Definitely some of the most creative combat I've seen in the genre, and I'm super curious to see how it'll scale up as I get further in.

The combat system is smart, interesting, challenging and ultimately quite fun, while the exploration part is competentet, with some nice puzzles, but honestly a bit thin (and not helped by a hard to read map). Which is more ore less the opposite of how many metroidvania work (at least the ones I played). I’m not sure if it’s good or …
