Ribbit is a massive variety mod based on Deltarune Chapter 1, that tells an entirely new story about frogs, ghosts, and the strange powers that surround them both. Half a joke mod, half a character-driven mystery narrative, it is an experiment in seeing just how far Deltarune modding could be taken during the 2019-2021 period, retaining Deltarune's familiar locations, while inserting new custom scenes and gameplay mechanics into them.

Smells like unstability.

This is a mod of Deltarune, and in terms of gameplay and changes, it does a great job, a lot has been changed, a lot that is new is very interesting, and a lot of the new game momments are shocking, that's as tame as the review is gonna get. Basically imagine Deltarune but fucked up, but in a good way.

It is everything that would turn away someone who thinks they're too good enough for some dumb humor essentially, little would their "too big for one's britches" personality mind think of... Basically imagine Deltarune but fucked up, but in a good way.

It is everything that would turn away someone who thinks they're too good enough for some dumb humor essentially, little would their "too big for one's britches" personality mind think of... They'll be missing out on essentially is one of the greatest showcases of effort and love I've ever seen in a modding community ever since that one Deus Ex mod that also wasn't that serious and was about the Deus Ex Forums (The Nameless mod), much like the Nameless Mod, it is a love letter to not only the game but to the culture around it,

Deadpool, Rick and Morty, get fucked! No matter how much you try with trying to win over people with your cool personality saying you don't care about tonal shift, you will never reach the violation of tone that ironic kids on the internet do! This is a game that will show you references to every good video game out there (not spoiling) and then immediately after that show a mangled corpse on a cross contouring itself disturbingly to the FUNKIEST MUSIC EVER. NO but really, the ghost shit can be genuinely disgusting sometimes, and the shock content can be a hard hitter for some people even if it's contrast is funny.

It is a game that takes pride in it's abrasiveness and lack of structural tone, it is basically a middle finger to any coherent idea of theme, which in itself feels like a revenge towards people who don't believe that people, much like works by people, can contain multitudes, there are traces of this feeling like they come from repurposed assets from a canceled trauma RPG Maker game (the ghost shit) and then, it feels real, it feels visceral, it is like an actual person you meet that might have some real issues going on with them but that doesn't stop them from posting DANK MEMES on IFunny, SomethingAwful, Twitter or something iqually horrible.

We are reaching an apex of human personality here where we are actually making a parody of a parody of a parody, we are post-post-post-modernism here, we don't give a fuck, we throw shit on the wall and see what sticks, and the yeah, it is one of those weird rare scenarios where tonal problems work in it's favor, I am not some weak minded critic who can't balance viewing something as both serious as silly at the same time, I can look at something from multiple ways ok? We live in a post ironic world, and not many people "GET IT", not many people get that you can half-joke about everything or half-be-serious about the same as well. Anyways whenever something is genuinely scary and there is a mood whiplash in this game, and the game uses seriousness as humor, it is fucking brilliant.

Very few projects out there go out fill that niche feeling of using genuinely creepy concepts as humor, or you know the contrast in itself between serious, dark shit, disturbing imagery, and then followed by the simple-mindlessness of LOLCAT memes essentially, and you can honestly see it forming around the internet too, it goes by many names but I heard them be described as "schizo memes", the general idea of taking humor and making it scary, it's like the nice feeling you get when you are courageous enough to ignore all of the rumors of the weird kid in your class, and once you get to know them, you realize how nice of a person they are, even if they get kicks from scaring people for fun.

The Undertale/Deltarune/Sans Universe Series (SUS) community is filled with those kind of people, people who are quirky and love creepypasta shit, memes, this ironic personality that isn't worried at all if you take them serious or not, they're beyond that, they just wanna show you a few impressive instantous tricks that won't take much of your time, they have a nice fun to be around personality, carefree good sense of humor, and you either find it really unfunny or the funniest thing you've ever seen, and you don't even know why. It is the same feeling of when you are nervously laughing and saying "What the fuck? Hahahaha" And that nervous laughter not only is both a combination of uncomfortable with trying to laugh off things, it has a lil mixture of sadness, like one teaspoon in there, other emotions might be in that big recipe too, like being genuinely impressed and how odd something is, but the feeling of "Hahaha what the fuck?" whenever it be shock content, the absurdity of a joke, genuinely not knowing how to react to something sad or awkward, is a very special feeling that is kinda nice to have out of morbid curiosity for the audacity that is this joke of a world you know?

Things that don’t take themselves too seriously are always welcome, like I don't even know how to take most things seriously myself, how am I expected to take things seriously at all in this world? And the ironic-like personality of many internet communities has that comfortable feel, the "We are watching the world burn, but we will have fun with all of this shit", it is the feeling you get when seeing your kinda obnoxious uncle who tries really hard to win you over with so bad they're good jokes one day get so fucking drunk, you cannot help but join in with the manic energy of what is going on and go "GO UNCLE GO!!! ANOTHER BEER!".

In a way it being a mod project gives it so much artistic liberty, no seriously, in a way, it is even better than shit like this comes in the form of a fan-made project, because you can't get this with a 100% earnest original product, you only get stuff like this, once a creator starts making their own original content they start filtering their thoughts and organizing a little too much, which in a way depletes the cool wild aspect that is a sight to behold.

You also lose the chance of it's own liberties with music, nice choice of music should be noted, they’re all bangers here, not to spoil much but bonus points for including Aphex Twin. There are blinks of brilliance inside some of the dumbest and brainless shit you've ever seen, you can be both smart and dumb, you can be the smartest person ever in the world and some video game streamer or inside joke that is just a phrase is enough to make you laugh non-stop.

It doesn't help that the inside jokes in this fan made project are the ones that directly hit me. Seriously it makes me feel as if we're all clones and none of us ever had a single original thought in any of our lives, we just happened to all be there through the same internet subcultures at the same time, the same youtube poops, the same streamers, the same 2008 memes. There is an insane venn diagram of demographics here and weidly enough I am one of the few in it.

The internet started off on shit like this, I live for this kinda shit, remember Animutations? The ADHD fueled flash animations on the early internet (sometimes Newgrounds, sometimes Blacksheep)? They encapsulated this disregard of copyright, of any sense of rule, but still managed to make mindless fun and entertainment with it. This type of stuff brings me back to the days when seeing a thousand things clash toghether wasn't a corporate grab but fans genuinely trying to be zanny and free with their interests.

It is pure passion I see in this work, and in a way that makes this mod work and be just good as the original. it is toneally different from deltarune, in fact it's whole thing is a fan community going: How can we make something opposite in every single way to Deltarune while still making it seem: this comes from people who do like Deltarune, so it isn't that far, just on the other end of the ying and yang. There will be people who can't enjoy this because it is literally goes against everything Deltarune was for, I am someone who can both appreciate both, and it isn't just the anti-thesis of Deltarune, it is doing it's own weird thing while being Deltarune-esque.

It is rare to actually find something that actually shines out there as completely outrageous for me, trust me, i've seen my share of weird shit across the internet, but this game actually goes out to push the envelope, it is not safe, it is obnoxious, it is loud, it does not try to limit itself to some idea of respect, it does what it does and it does it well.

Weirdly enough a parody comedy game that basically throws as much references as it can towards you in one weird way ends up being one of the most punk shit I've played in some time honestly? Like there are many indie games out there that are bad on purpose for the sake of being punk, but this one goes out of it's way to be punk while still being a love letter to video games and the obnoxious culture around it. The fan theories, the number of vague things that any direction one thing could go in, again, a project that fully understands it's all good fun, and we've gone so far with cliches that it just funny.

This is surprisingly one of the dumbest mods of a game I have ever played, and yet, it ends up being smart, and I respect it so fucking much. Literally a fan project that is both a mockery and a tribute, with as much love and passion, if not more, than the original. Complete insanity all the time, pushing the envelope all the time.

Honestly one could be very nitpicky and talk about you know, the project making sense, but the thing about it is that, it's a Twin Peaks sorta situation, if you find out who killed Laura Palmer, not only does it raises more questions, but it kinda ruins the whole entertainment of the mystery right? Like what you get is what is best: Vague ideas and the feelings that gives you, it is a roller coaster of emotions, and that in itself is funny... I love comedy!

There is a phrase in this project that is a bit more serious and it sticks itself out and it's "Why'd you have to make it so hard [to like you]?" and honestly that could be very be any normal player reaction to the insanity that is going on on the screen, or a very weird person who has some cool ideas but is too weird of a person to actually properly execute them. The relation someone might have with this game is hard and complicated as it is, as told before, a non-serious comedy horror existentialist postpostpost-modernist meme fest that reminds me of the same atmosphere I get from schizo memes, but I think most would agree that they had quite the experience regardless.

Even if the game does offer an optional exposition that brings a little coherence and closure to the dadaist surrealist mess one experiences (It is basically like a fanfic for a Space Jam situation, which is great). It is important to realize that sometimes a project doesn't need to make sense 100%, it doesn't need to have a coherent plot, or characters, or tone, or theme, or anything, it just needs to be fun and impactful at best, it can just be about how it makes you feel in that moment, and feelings are pretty random, usually a phrase like that would excuse some pretty bullshit pretentious art with 0 effort and no inertia whatsoever, but I guarantee you, this is the least from that form of pretencious stuff, it is more of a "playing with concepts and ideas, and having fun with them" situation.

Go fucking play it if you are even remotely in the know-how of Deltarune, it should be considered official to some extent because it really does feel like an actual entry in the series, that's how much effort it has, no exaggeration. Go ahead and kill Susie in this game.
