The music and art style made this one looks really interesting. But action feels too slow and damage output feels too low. Certainly possible that it opens up a bit more as you get into it - though it's mostly a multi-player battle game.

It's fun. Remember fun?

I got Awesomenauts in a HumbleBundle back in 2013. I wasn't interested in it because i don't like MOBAs and i thought it sounded lame. I probably only installed it because it has cards. As it turns out Awesomenauts is, well, awesome!

I got Awesomenauts in a HumbleBundle back in 2013. I wasn't interested in it because i don't like MOBAs and i thought it sounded lame. I probably only installed it because it has cards. As it turns out Awesomenauts is, well, awesome!

There's only one real problem and that is the small player base. You can usually find a game against bots within 2 minutes but against other players it can take 2-3 times longer. I only play against bots so it doesn't bother me, but others might mind.

So why is this the only MOBA i like? Well, the problem i have with MOBAs and MMORPGs is that it's boring to just stand there and press 1-9 to attack. Often you don't even have to aim. But in Awesomenauts you only have 2 active skills and they generally require aiming. Most of the damage comes from your normal attack, which requires aiming (with the mouse). It is much more interactive.

And on top of that is the platforming element. In MOBAs you normally just walk around on a flat surface. Here you have to navigate the map and you can jump, drop, fly, etc. to surprise enemies or escape. With two vertical lanes that you can quickly switch between you avoid the drudgery of watching and walking between three lanes.

Awesomenauts also has great characters that are almost all fun to play. Coco is a valley girl who flies on a surfboard. Yoolip is a time-travelling engineer who summons dinobots. Gnaw is a monster that poops out mini-turret weedlings. Voltar is a German-sounding brain in a robot body who summons drones. Plus another 30 characters including a space marine without pants. They all play differently and can be built in several ways for more variation. I just enjoy trying everything out.

If you want to play some relaxing games with a variety of fun characters, Awesomenauts is the game for you.

MOBA for those who don't like MOBAs

I think Awesomenauts is on to something. The simplicity here of tower defense/MOBA style crossed with platformer should be much more appealing to those who don't particularly like the MOBA format. Here, there is still teamwork, appealing graphics, light combat, and soaking minions, but the need to "stay in your lane" doesn't come through in the same way that it …

I think Awesomenauts is on to something. The simplicity here of tower defense/MOBA style crossed with platformer should be much more appealing to those who don't particularly like the MOBA format. Here, there is still teamwork, appealing graphics, light combat, and soaking minions, but the need to "stay in your lane" doesn't come through in the same way that it does in a game like HOTS or LOL. I did not see a large player base here, unfortunately in the time that I spent with it. I had to spend more time playing bots than I had intended because it took so long to get a game. Despite being free to play, I'm not sure the word is getting out on this one adequately OR maybe there aren't enough people who need this niche market of "not quite a full MOBA."

Addictive, challenging, frustrating, hilarious and sensational for multiplaying with buddies, Awesomenauts is pretty much everything you'd want in a side-scrolling MOBA-style game.
