Super Mario Land is the first Mario's outing on the Game Boy. It is a side-scrolling platformer much in the vein of the previous Super Mario Bros. This time, Mario must save Princess Daisy, rather than Princess Toadstool, from her kidnapper Tatanga, a mysterious spaceman. The game follows largely the same formula of its aforementioned predecessor, with Mario defeating enemies … Read more

This time, Mario must save Princess Daisy, rather than Princess Toadstool, from her kidnapper Tatanga, a mysterious spaceman. The game follows largely the same formula of its aforementioned predecessor, with Mario defeating enemies by jumping on them and collecting coins and power ups by hitting floating blocks, with each world leading up to a boss fight which is defeated using by collapsing the floor. A unique feature of this installment is two scrolling shoot-'em-up levels, the first of which Mario pilots a submarine, and the second an aeroplane. Read less

Beat this game for the first time today, so that feels pretty good. Honestly, the only thing that really stands out is that it's a Mario game and it doesn't really look, sound, or feel like a Mario game. I like the music and the devs did a good job avoiding a problem I have with other handheld platformers where you don't see enough of the screen. It doesn't really do anything wrong per se, but I find I didn't really enjoy it enough to recommend this game to other people in 2024, outside of Mario fans that are curious.

Pretty good game just a bit mediocre. It was for the original gameboy so the game is really short and can be beaten in about 30-40 minutes. Not much to say other than the worlds are pretty cool and the music is good.

Day 17: Some people don't like Super Mario Land. Those people probably missed out on this little ditty.

For a first handheld entry on hardware as old as the Game Boy, Mario Land is a decent take on the Mario 1 formula. But at the end of the day, it's not as good as Mario 1, and is a lot shorter to boot. It's a strangely janky old-school Mario, but I get it was surely the best they could manage for the system at the time.

I do think it's still worth playing if you're a Mario fan, if only for the weirdness of it all. A lot of enemies (such as the Chinese hopping zombies, which I thought were ninja girls lol), locales (you go to Easter Island in this one), and gimmicks (Mario can spit a bouncing bowling ball) that didn't really stick around for the Marioverse at large, which gives it all an odd "fan game" sort of feel to it. What other Mario game is going to have you defeat the final boss (yes, a space alien) in a shoot-em-up stage with Mario piloting a biplane?

I liked this one as a kid, but this one just didn't age well and there's not much point in playing this when you already had the original Mario Bros games on the NES. The physics and controls are wonky and the schmup sections drag it down a lot for me as it doesn't feel like a Mario game. Some …

One of the weaker Mario titles, but I would much rather play this than The Lost Levels.

Hey this is pretty cool. Having just played Donkey Kong Country the other week this def reminds me of that aesthetic. But plenty of other details make it look better than the raw rugged clay look of late era SNES titles, it's on par with gamecube i think!
