Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles - Ring of Fates is a prequel to Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles for the Nintendo DS. Yuri and Chelinka are fraternal twins who live happily with their father in a small village, but their happiness comes to an abrupt end when an ancient evil force arrives. Now, with his family shattered, Yuri begins to train so that he can be strong enough to fight when the evil returns. Yuri and Chelinka set out on their quest to find their friends, avenge their family, and heal their world.

Glimmers of promise in an ultimately disappointing package
This review is for the Nintendo DS version

There are some fundamentally interesting gameplay mechanics and story ideas, but the game insists on tripping over itself constantly. There are aspects of the plot that are intriguing, but extremely irritating characters make it a slog to get through new developments as they unfold. Everyone has some quirky yoda-esque speech pattern, so when there's a conversation with multiple characters it gets tiresome quickly. There are interesting action combat and puzzle mechanics, but I found myself unable to enjoy them due to extremely braindead companion AI and frustrating uses of the touch screen controls. There were also numerous points in the game where I had to look up guides in order to progress, because you have to find a specific NPC or talk to a specific character multiple times in a row, and there's no way to know what cryptic sequence you have to undergo to proceed forward. The performance in certain dungeons was also really poor when more than 1 or 2 enemies would be on screen simultaneously. I could see this being a good "road trip" game as a kid playing at the time it came out, but playing it in 2024, it's hard to find much to grab …
