You can challenge a friend, or take on a multi-talented computer squad. You can also choose from three difficulty levels - Junior, College and Pro. Throughout the game, you'll constantly be tested by every intense element of championship hockey, from Penalty and Overtime Scenes to Knockout Smash-Hit Fight Scenes. Speed, strength, quickness and instinct are talents you must possess if you plan to prevail, especially when the anger flares, gloves come off and fists start flying. It's hard hitting action at its toughest. And you'll soon learn that in this league nothing's ever given to you, and before you can reach your goals - you have to score them. You've gotta master the artful skill of a finesse player and the bone crushing brutality of an enforcer. You'd better be versatile as well, because you must skillfully control your forwards, centers, defensemen and even the goalie, who'll defend the net against unrelenting Power Plays (which will occur if you lose a fight and have your battered carcass banned to the Penalty Box). You'd think I oughta love hockey. Being from Sweden and growing up skateboarding and playing inline street hockey during the summers. During the long, dark winters however, I stayed inside and played video games. We never owned Blades of Steel. We had 'Ice Hockey'. I love 'Ice Hockey', but looking back I think we would have thought this was way cooler, and played this a lot more. It's still an arcade type hockey game, but the style and overall design is taken way more serious in Blades of Steel, and there's even fighting! Win the fight and you get the chance to score. It gets real fun and hectic when you're franticly trying to score and the other players are interfering, and you just keep...rebounding??...like I said - don't watch much hockey.

If I had this back in the day I would have definitely tried to win all cups with all teams etc, and I noticed playing for a few hours now that I got better at it. There's skill involved for sure, and it just feels good the way you switch players, turn and how the players respond to impact. Both teams can and will score a lot, and even if you just button mash and act crazy you can make life hell for your opponent, and I bet the arcade is even more fun. Blades of Steel is a great sports title that still holds up, even if I don't have any fond childhood memories of it, like I have of NHL mother 'effing '94.
