Main game
3.57 average rating based on 105 ratings
Ken Follett's The Pillars of the Earth is based on the book The Pillars of the Earth by, well, Ken Follett (obvious statement is obvious). The book itself is highly rated - on Goodreads, it has an average rating of 4.32 out of 5 from 694,640 ratings. I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but a book that popular and that highly rated promises to be something good.
What then, does the game add to the book? Partly animated visuals, fully voiced dialogue, and a musical score. These additions are great, and there is clearly a lot of work behind them. The game also makes an effort to add interactivity into the story. This is implemented as a point-and-click mechanic which is used to solve small puzzles, talk to characters, move around and such.
Unfortunately, the end result is a mixed bag. The level of interactivity is shallow, and it fails to add anything meaningful to the story (The Walking Dead, this is not). It also clashes poorly against the epic scope of the story. At times, I felt that I was playing a simple game that was encumbered with a story that was bigger than …

Unfortunately, the end result is a mixed bag. The level of interactivity is shallow, and it fails to add anything meaningful to the story (The Walking Dead, this is not). It also clashes poorly against the epic scope of the story. At times, I felt that I was playing a simple game that was encumbered with a story that was bigger than itself. And there is no option to turn it off (along the lines of a 'story mode') - you need to click through every inane conversation to move forward.
It is also incredibly frustrating that conversations can't be interrupted. Want to pause or exit the game? You'll need to wait until the next interactive section starts. That could take anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes. Even the ending screen for chapters do not give you a way to exit.
I keep thinking that this game would have been more entertaining and impactful as a visual novel, instead of the point-and-click adventure that it struggles to be. In my playthrough, I made it to the last chapter of book two. I"m not planning to continue, because the game has started to feel like a chore.
It's definitely a unique game. The story, visuals and voice acting are all above average. However, as far as I noticed during the gameplay, the thing that reduced the immersion was that the characters moved very slowly. I wish they walked faster. Sometimes they even speak much slower than they should.
Another important problem was that the esc key didn't work between scenes in the game. The esc key only works in the free-roaming parts of the game, otherwise, when you are not satisfied with a dialog you have chosen, unfortunately, it does not allow you to exit and reload your save file.
Of course, don't expect all the choices you make to be effective. For the most part, there are only a few choices in each episode that actually have an impact, and the rest are just simple choices that affect the dialog in the scenes and often create the illusion of choice. Although it is not a game for everyone, it can be tried for those who like the middle ages games.

This is a point-and-click historical fiction novel. It's a good story that's quite emotional at times. I definitely enjoyed it, but it's also a bit mundane and bland compared to top-notch walking simulators such as The Walking Dead, Life is Strange, and What Remains of Edith Finch -- all of which are extremely emotionally-stimulating compared to The Pillars of the Earth.
A tightly crafted, engrossing storyline with ZERO FILLER, impactful choices, great writing and characters, the game draws you into a rich historical setting and keeps you engaged from start to finish. I'll especially recommend this if you're interested in more philosophical or theological themes. It's also on a very steep sale right now ($1 (gg.deals)).
Seriously underrated title.
