Remember when they used to sell aquarium screensavers for $20 in department stores? Compared to those, Mountain is a bargain ($0.99) and a triumph... a modestly interactive, reasonably pretty, occasionally thought-provoking way of occupying those pixels you weren't using anyway.
But Mountain isn't billed as a screensaver or sold in department stores, which is probably why it continues to draw the ire of many reviewers.
It may be coincidence that Mountain is only one letter off from Duchamp's 1917 sculpture, Fountain. It may also be coincidence that both works challenge the audience's preconceived notion of what is or isn't acceptable in their respective context. Perhaps critics of both works are onto something... maybe these really are the products of lazy asset flippers who've run out of ideas.
But then again, maybe not.
Mountain is basically a low-effort asset flip. It's a lazily made "mountain" with low resolution objects and weather sometimes appearing. There's also some dialogue that shows up randomly or if you press ".". That's all there is to it. I've played actual asset flips that had more work put into them.
I'd label this an interactive screensaver, not a game. But whether its a game or not does not matter, as long as its immersive and entertaining. Mountain is none of these things. It's designed to run in the background or on your smartphone while your busy doing other things. The weather changes and random things and thoughts pop up. I never got the feeling that I cared about my mountain at all though. maybe these "caring" Tamagochi simulators are simply not for me.
