After I saw the trailer for ConnecTank this week, I decided to replay the game that inspired it.
I enjoyed this game, maybe a bit too much. I expected to only play for 30 minutes and ending up playing for 3 hours in my first session. The tank fights were actually my least favourite sections of the game and much preferred the puzzle exploration sections.
I thought I hadn't finished this game when I first played but as soon as I got to the final level I suddenly remembered the ending and realised I had already played this in its entirety (which is shame because I would have liked to play a new game).
There's really two aspects to this game.
Most of your time is spent reconstructing your town by finding other townslimes who are usually behind critters and various obstacles you can either cart away or defeat. This is simplistic but fun. I liked building up the town (always a sucker for that kind of thing) and the puns are numerous and humorous. If this was the only aspect of the game though it would get old pretty fast.
But it's not! After awhile you unlock a tank and have tank battles. You launch items you've collected in the first part at other tanks. Your tank is staffed by other slimes and monsters you've found. It is fast paced, ridiculous, and highly entertaining. And it's addictive to unlock aspects of your tank by collecting more from the overworld.
It's not a perfect game by any means, but it is adorable and a lot of fun for awhile.
Pros:
-- A twist on what otherwise come off as a Zelda-clone
-- The Cannon Fight battle system seems unique but*
-- You get to play as a Slime from the Dragon Quest series...?
Cons:
-- *...the ammo system is nearly too convoluted to work with
-- Controls, mainly when trying to grab items (the main mechanic of Cannon Fights), are very finicky and frustrating
-- Difficulty spikes towards the end of the game leave you wondering if ammo, teams, and strategy actually matter
