I had played it 12 years ago for review purposes and back then I loved it, so it made sense to me. We started playing as we usualy do with point and clicks: she manages the mouse, I enojy my co-piloting duties from the back. And we were having fun! It is a funny game, stilistically amazing and completely crazy. Also, it’s quite readable and easy to approach, even though navigation can be tough because of a cryptic map. But we were having fun, my daughter was constantly asking to play it… and then she wanted to stop. Too many bizarre and threatening big spiders, she didn’t want to play it anymore. We were approximately around two thirds of the game. Whatevs.

The tree is a maze and you have to click through a ton of screens to get anywhere. On every screen you can click on stuff which often doesn't actually do anything other than playing an animation. Puzzles consist of either clumsily manipulating objects or just clicking everywhere hoping you guess the right thing to click on in the right order. Maybe it'd be worth it if there was a map and it at least indicated where you have to randomly click on stuff.

A little gem of a point and click adventure. Loved the unique visual style and the unerringly original sound design, which deserves all the praise it's received. Also lots of great visual gags and unexpected interactive elements.

Artistic Value: The game looks beautiful. The style is pleasant and fantastic, although it might not be to everyone's taste. Artistic Value: The game looks beautiful. The style is pleasant and fantastic, although it might not be to everyone's taste. Ambience gets darker when it needs to and always goes well with the overall setting. There are a couple of rooms where there is too much going on and the screen feels cluttered. Good music and ambience sound that perfectly fits in with the visual style. The characters' "voices" rarely fail to convey the necessary emotion (not that this is an extremely emotive game). None of the music themes really stand out though. Rating = 8/10 for superb.
Gameplay: Although the overall mechanics were somewhat original in this puzzle-solver when it came out, the puzzles themselves feel small and not very fulfilling. It's very easy to navigate through the game with such intuitive controls. The mechanics and objectives are rarely confusing. The interface never gets in the way of puzzle-solving. The puzzles difficulty range from very easy to regular, which might be a downside. Rating = 7/10 for great.
Fun Factor: The story is simple and universal but presented in an original manner. The characters you meet are fun to interact with. Hardcore puzzle-solvers will breeze through the game in a couple hours and there is no real replay value. AFAIK this game is completely bug free. The game has a lot of charm. Rating = 8/10 for superb.
Final Verdict: Charming little game that looks beautiful. Rating = 7.7/10 for Superb.

I have loved all of Amanita's games, and this one is no exception. They are not perfect games by any means, the puzzles often seem random and you may feel like you're just clicking around the screen randomly to solve them. On the other hand, there is a lot of interactivity in the environment and everything makes a sound, so even just randomly clicking can generate a wonderful soundscape. Ultimately, it's the music, voices, and art design that keep me coming back to Amanita's games, and Botanicula is one of their best.
