Played during free trial on Steam. I started off making a centipede like vehicle just to carry all the stuff I was getting, but that proved to be extremely unwieldy. I then built what I called a buggy; a very simple boxy vehicle with a lot of forward facing guns. It helped a lot when I figured out the lasers were long range, so I mostly used them. The "light machine gun" is more like a grenade launcher, so I put some facing up on the rear with radar on the side and a drill on front. Not the best designed vehicle but it got me through the early parts and allowed me to kill a tough Geo Corp enemy to get some sweet parts for the next vehicle.
Basic design of my new "harvester tank" was a loader with a drill on the front. I put the cab on top behind some boxes and guns, including the awesome mega cannon. The back was mostly resource holders and this thing could harvest a ton of stuff. I put some hub wheels on the bottom after fighting an enemy that had a redundant set of wheels. This vehicle's main weakness was getting the front wheels blown off. I put some armor plating on the side (also on the rear for the version I uploaded) and covered the entire thing in guns facing every direction. Had some batteries and I would put a shield generator on the undercarriage in front for tougher fights. Shortly after making this thing I found out about the inventory. I was keeping my stuff on the ground around a trading station; I had no idea there was an actual storage. I found out by being given a bag of holding like thing that sucks things into your inventory. I went around with that thing attached to the back of my vehicle until I figured out you could put it directly into the inventory and only take it out as needed. I used this vehicle until a mission to get rid of this guy camping on a bridge. He one shotted me on my first attempt and I thought the game scripted the death. I tried from the other direction and managed to kill him, though my vehicle was wrecked. I got a lot of sweet military weapons from that, so I decided to design an all new vehicle.
Enter the actual tank. So I noticed I had found a set of Geo Corp continuous tracks. So I started playing around with those and a few different sizes of basic frames using the big yellow blocks. I put armor plating around the entire thing and I had planned to make an entire upper layer of small armored blocks with batteries and stuff inside. But the tank turret would not attach so I put some armored batteries and a gyroscope on the back. The cab is on the top in the back with armor plating all around it. A tank turret on the front and on top of the cab. 2 forward facing battleship guns, and 2 facing sideways. Couple of megacannons and heavy machine guns on top of those, mortars on the center and other guns wherever they would fit. Lastly a booster on the back. I also put armor plating on the undercarriage but the big industrial ones keep grinding against the ground, so I replaced them with the smaller grey ones. This thing was very manoeurverable and had massive frontal firepower. Not sure how effective those side battleship guns were and how much their side rocking affected forward accuracy. Almost nothing facing the rear but that was ok. I had a better shield generator that I could stick on one of the guns for difficult fights, but for the most part this thing wrecked everything and barely took any damage.
I tried building a plane but failed to get off the ground. I then found a bombing mission which gave me a fully functional plane and a flight tutorial. The flight controls are garbage. I somehow managed to complete the mission, bomb (but not kill) some random enemies and land back at my tank without crashing. I had to fiddle around with the keybindings a lot to make the controls barely passable. Q and E control and up and down facing of the nose. W and S control forwards and backwards on the ground. A and D control turning using the tail, which does very little in flight. Z and C control turning using the wings. Mouse does nothing to the aircraft and is only for the camera. Also have to constantly hold shift to keep the propeller going. Terrible. I very quickly got sick of flying; too many buttons to keep track of. Maybe it is better with a controller or an actual flight joystick?
Near the end of my playtime I bought a hovercraft. I really wanted an attack helicopter but I guess I will have to settle for the hover. It was fast and somewhat easy to control but terrible offense. It had very little room to add on, so I ended up sticking some armored blocks on the back and making a kind of gun rail, with a battleship cannon on each side. Fiddle around a bit with the location of the hover pads and add some blocks with room for guns on the front. This all made it very difficult to control as the side guns would make it swing around widely, especially if the terrain was not even. It was faster and could get around easier than the tank, and the decent altitude made it difficult for enemies to hit, but I took more damage from crashing into things than from anything else. Near the end I got some better guns (like those heavy machine guns on my tank and railguns) that I put on the front for better offense. This thing was also difficult to repair due to how difficult it was to control and attempt any kind of precision landing.
Now I am not the most creative person, especially when it comes to engineering, but this game was fun. I did not really care for the harvesting and was totally not into the idea of refining materials and crafting your own stuff. Hell with that I just want to kill others and take their stuff. The lack of story is the game's main flaw; the campaign felt more like randomly wandering around doing radiant style side quests. Too much open world sandbox and not enough narrative hook. I was very impressed with the building and engineering physics, and think this would be a great game for kids. Personally, I might buy it if it goes super cheap but it is not exactly my preferred type of game. I did not try multiplayer, but I could see competitive PVP being a big thing.
