Well, it looks like this game is actually competent from the reviews I've seen. It looks really fun. It feels weird being positive about Bethesda, like I'm not ready to forgive & forget Fallout 76. I'm conflicted now.

This is pretty meaningless because I've only played maybe four hours of this game so far but it is kind of everything I want out of a big, broad space RPG. Beautiful, massive, vast, awe-inspiring. Some usual Bethesda quirks, but hey, I knew what I signed up for.

Soundtrack is one of the best I've heard in years, too.

Aside from Fallout, Elder Scrolls, and the Red Dead Redemption series, I consider myself a pretty patient gamer and avoid pre ordering or buying on release. Now to completely contradict myself, I just watched ACGs starfield review and the footage convinced me to pre order. I got it for 25% off at £43 for PC (I likely wouldn't have bought it at full price). I'm insanely excited to dive into a new Bethesda game since the release of fallout 4, and no I'm not counting the garbage that is F76 and Elder Scrolls Online although I haven't experienced ESO for myself.

How are people feeling about this game? ACGs review mentioned that the game isn't as seamless as people had hoped, specifically the transition between land and space - it's a bunch of loading screens from what I've seen. Personally it only bothers me slightly. I'm not particularly interested by the story either although I'm hoping this approach will mean I'm pleasantly surprised if there is anything worth sticking around for story-wise.

I'm excited for the classic Bethesda loop though, the exploring, fighting, scavenging, and selling. Mixed with base building, ship building mechanics, and enemy ship boarding, I think I'll be hooked for a long time. The "NASA-punk" art direction also looks phenomenal and I love the lived-in feel that Bethesda games are known for. I don't enjoy completely spoiling new games by watching tons of content though, so I switched off the review after a while but it looks like there's a few surprises, even some prey style horror elements in the game somewhere which could be neat!

From what I've seen of early reviews of Starfield, it sounds like it's a good, but not great, game.

Tears of the Kingdom looks like will still be the frontrunner for 2023 GOTY.

It Could Take 130 Hours To Really Start Starfield, Bethesda Exec Says

Bethesda’s forthcoming space epic Starfield is apparently so long, it’s made the developer’s head of publishing Pete Hines lose all sense of time. At a Bethesda MainStream event during Gamescom 2023, Hines said he felt like the action role-playing game didn’t “really [...] get going” until he took 50 hours to finish its main quest. That was after he’d already dropped 80 hours into sidequests.

LAUNCH DATE BABYYY

Look I'm sure Bethesda will let me down in some way but I can't help but get excited for Starfield. It's basically everything I want out of a big space game

I just watched this IGN interview with Todd Howard:

I'm honestly kinda hyped and it scares me. I mean, if we just get Skyrim/Fallout (3/4) in space, I'll still enjoy it, but I'm actually a bit hopeful now this will be more. I should know better, but Todd actually said the things I wanted to hear. Damn him.

Of note for me:

  1. Spaceship systems inspired by FTL and combat inspired by Mech Warrior
  2. Very realistic talk about the use of procedural generation
  3. Longer main quest
  4. New Atlantis being the biggest city they've ever built (which, I'm not sure is saying that much haha)
  5. Most importantly: "We love our modding community. We actually think this game, for our modding community, is going to be a dream... because there's so much they can do"

I'm honestly really excited by the launch video. Even if a the systems end up being shallow, most of the 100 solar systems are boring procedural schlock, and the character writing is what you'd expect from Bethesda, I think I'll have a lot of fun with it. I'm honestly really excited by the launch video. Even if a the systems end up being shallow, most of the 100 solar systems are boring procedural schlock, and the character writing is what you'd expect from Bethesda, I think I'll have a lot of fun with it. I'm the type of sicko that saved up to buy a new PC so I could play Morrowind at more than 8 frames per second when it was new but vastly prefers Skyrim these days. Also, if I get even a little dose of Freelancer from the space portions, I'll be happy as can be.
