Disclaimer: it is only fair for me to disclose that I have played both LOL, DotA, and DOTA 2 prior to playing HOTS, as it seems most people only feel one game is worth mentioning.
Blizzard steps into the MOBA arena with HOTS. I personally started playing HOTS during the Overwatch promo period, where if you played HOTS you unlocked skins in Overwatch. I got a few Overwatch friends together and we tried to bang out a few games to get the loot. We thought after getting the loot we would be done, but when we tried to return to Overwatch the damage had been done. We were HOTS people now. This is one of the things HOTS does well. It gets you hooked even if you don't have a lot of prior experience. Everything is very accessible. Compared to other MOBAs this simplicity is nice to see as it can be easier to pick up and enjoy. As we climbed and grew as strategists and players we started to see some of HOTS's flaws.

Instead of trying to have the perfect map HOTS tries to have a bunch of ok maps. Each map has its own playstyle and its own objectives. This is great at first because you get a variety of gameplay experiences. However, some of the maps were so poorly designed that they had to be removed from the game entirely. In addition, having so many maps creates a problem with accessibility. Now instead of worrying about what item to buy you have to worry about if your teammate knows where the control beacon is. Lack of voice communication compounds this issue as typing and pinging don't seem to get the job done in many cases. Many characters are ill-suited for certain maps which can also be a large balance issue.
These issues aside HOTS does do some things very well. By having timed events on the maps gameplay is paced. You don't end up with long periods of boredom. The action is fun fluid and continuous. Sometimes you may feel restricted by the guided gameplay, but you end up with very little downtime and with a large number of big team battles that fans of MOBAs love. Overall, I think having these mini-games within the game create a different experience from other similar titles. By making something unique Blizzard can compete in the same space as the big boys.
Map rotations, character rotations, and balance patches all play a big role in your experience. Frequently, I knew by the time the loading screen went up if I was going to enjoy a game. HOTS though fun for a while fell flat quickly and never managed to regain its steam.
Between my 3500+ hours with it and the fact that I still play it to this date - more than a decade later after I got access to the alpha - I'd say I'm pretty fond of this game...
i had a friend who played this and i tried it for a bit, maybe putting a half dozen hours into it. Found it easier to learn a character or two, with less items and nuances, however its still the same kind of MOBA game.
This is the best moba there is. Simple as. I played this game but then switched to league of legends cause my friends played it. Played hots on and off until finally quitting league a few years ago, becoming a better person in the progress. I played it more again and its still awsome. Its like everything fun in league minus the stuff that makes you wanna stab your wrists with rusty scissors. Pls update game Blizz, is gud
I've found myself returning HotS and I'm not proud of it.
Its accessibility and ease of muting team chat has kept me in an interactive pace. Being a healer class feels nice at the moment.
The clunk of my aged reaction time is spit across my win/loss ratio. It pairs with a similar amount of dust that now layers the title. Its easy to tell blizzard has moved on without looking at the patch notes. The matchmaking system routinely groups intimidating veterans with completely new players. While the sheer amount of characters and colour slaps the eyeballs.
In the end, I'm left feeling like I've bumped into old friend back home who never left our hometown. I just don't want to be rude and ask why they're still here.
This game seems dramatically easier to get a grip on than Dota 2 and League of Legends thanks to its substantially streamlined iteration on the DotA formula at all levels. So many of the mechanics I found overwhelming in League simply are not here or are dramatically reworked, which is definitely a big sacrifice in terms of depth. But in a "meta"-driven game, there were only ever a few items you are supposed to use anyway for example, and an amateur player certainly is not engaging in high-level decision making around those mechanics yet, so I lose pretty much nothing.
I really appreciate what they went for here, prioritizing action and shorter match times over dozens of micro-level decisions and excess farming time, while still maintaining the team coordination and some decision-making inherent to the MOBA genre.
One downside is that when compared to the kings of the genre, this game's overall personality and roster of characters is surprisingly dull. Yes, there are Overwatch characters here, though none really appeal to me in this context. Largely, the game is full of WarCraft, StarCraft, and Diablo characters, which have never really been my cup of tea. Oh well, at …

Oh well, at its core it's still fun to play, and I plan on playing this game a good amount on the side over the next few weeks.
Got a new graphics card that allows me to use Microsoft's recording thingy, which means I can record my sickest plays in HotS (well, the ones I liked the most), which means I can share it with other people! Yay!
Mei + Falstad is pretty sick
Current Favorite Heroes: Malfurion, Fenix, Alexstrasza, Thrall
This game has come a long way from its release. It's a ton of fun to play with friends, and the learning curve isn't as insane as other MOBAs. That doesn't mean it's a "simple" game, there's plenty of nuance and meta-gaming to be had. I just really like it, and I hope to see some awesome heroes in the future. Really want to see them do a take on C'Thun from World of Warcraft.
