Jaffar's only obstacle to the throne is the Sultan's daughter (although the game never specifically mentions how). Jaffar locks her in a tower and orders her, under threat of execution, to become his wife. The game's nameless protagonist, whom the Princess loves, is thrown into the palace dungeons. The player must lead the protagonist out of the dungeons and to the palace tower, defeating Jaffar and freeing the Princess in under 60 minutes. In addition to guards, various traps and dungeons, the protagonist is further hindered by his own doppelgänger, an apparition of his own self that is conjured out of a magic mirror. Read less

I feared replaying this and finding out it didn’t age well. I was being crazy. I feared replaying this and finding out it didn’t age well. I was being crazy. First of all, I immediately felt at home, I guess because I played it so much back then, and that must have helped (even though I honestly think it aged so much better than many of its contemporaries). Also, I played the fan-patched version that makes it run on modern OS and adds some quality of life stuff. And that must have helped too. But really, it still is amazing, and not just because of the general vibe, the visual style, the music, that bunch of great ideas (the mirror! The mouse! The twin!), no, it really still is so much fun. And it still is so much fun for the same reason that makes the original Doom still so much fun: you can feel in every pixel how it was maniacally designed and tragically polished to the edge of madness. It belongs in the “Perfect & Immortal” club.

Beat the game with 10 minutes to spare. I did not like the gameplay but it is a good game. I particularly liked the story animation, which is impressively expressive. The combat was reasonably enjoyable if a bit simplistic. I had to use a walkthrough for many levels and I needed to watch a video to get past one part in the 2nd last level to find out that I was failing over the single second taken for one extra step. The game is interesting but I would never have the patience to play it without save states and a guide. The game really needs a map, the lack of which caused most of my walkthrough checks. I also did not like the time limit to get past some gates and the complexity of some of the levels.
