Intro
ML is a free-to-play Action-RPG MMO set in the world of Magic: The Gathering. You walk around a pretty world, do quests and kill monsters.
The Good
Graphically it looks nice. Environments, monsters, spells - it all looks decent.
The Bad
This is an ARPG, like Diablo. So you expect visceral action, loot and levelling skills. Well, guess what. This game doesn't have any of that. Instead, you walk around and press 1,2,3 and hope that the randomly assigned spell does something useful.
Yes, you read that right. In this game you have a deck with spells and the game randomly generates 2 (later 3) of them for your to use. And they're tiny icons without a fucking name or any indication of the area they affect. You can see the later, but you have to hold the spell and can't unselect it.
I played this for like 3 hours or so and i got 2 hats. That's it in terms of items. Other than that you get cards, which technically are your skills. I got summons, damage spells and... nothing else. And because spells are selected randomly you don't feel like you really get them. Imagine playing Diablo and not knowing whether or not you'll get to use Whirlwind or Leap Attack. It's bizarre.
The game is also utterly devoid of graphical options. You can select windowed/fullscreen, gamma, AA on or off, quality and that's it.
The Ugly
The deadliest enemy in this game is the cursor. It is utterly microscopic. You spend half of the game trying to find the fucking cursor so you can actually target the randomly assigned spells.
It's Cryptic/Perfect World so it's filled with currencies and bizarre monetisation options designed specifically to confuse you. I read somewhere there are 13 different forms of currencies. Some it isn't even explained, like spells levelling by gathering pages (or scrolls?).
It runs like shit. This game looks nice but not even "good" and it still runs terribly. Even outside combat in an empty area.
Worst of all, it's boring. I got close to dying once but that's it. Enemies sometimes don't seem to register you and often aren't much of a threat. And because spells are randomly generated (did i mention that already?), you don't feel in control, so you can't "set things up". Part of the fun of ARPGs is knowing how to combine skills efficiently. Here you just can't do that.
Conclusion
If you want a good free ARPG, go play Path of Exile instead. If you want a great ARPG, get Grim Dawn. If you want a free ARPG MMO, play Neverwinter. Yes, even a game from 2013 by the same dev is vastly superior.
Just avoid this utterly disappointing mess. Seriously, who thought it would be a good idea to not enable players to use the skills they want to use?
