Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap feels like the result of expanding in every direction except forward. While it throws plenty of new elements into the mix, none of them stand out as true innovations over Orcs Must Die! 3. That said, it does have its strengths: a few great ideas, an enjoyable soundtrack, wide-open maps, a skill tree, and even and genuinely engaging gameplay. Just don’t even think about playing solo—you’ll end up suffering twice as much for the effort.

20 hours - This is a complicated game to rate. The fundamentals are quite good - I'm a huge sucker for Tower Defense and I did enjoy the previous Orcs Must Die! games and the switch to a roguelike is intriguing. I can't say I wasn't addicted for a time to gain skulls to upgrade my traps and characters, that's a nice touch. The variety of traps is overwhelming and the best part of the game is to mix and match them to see how they work on various levels.

That being said, the game gets very grindy and the fact that you can't skip ahead on missions means getting to mission 4 or 5 takes a long time, especially since the levels are overly large. They're fun to traverse and set up potential kill zones, but with limited resources, you're really only going to be focusing on one area so what's the point?

I can see with future upgrades this game getting better and better and it's a blast co-op but for now I'd give it a 3 or a 4 if I'm feeling generous.

"Hey guys, remember how we made a multiplayer OMD and no one liked it and it died in ~2 years? Guess what we just made? As a bonus, we added poor optimisation! Also barricades are limited now. Yay!"

I just... i don't get it. I just want an offline single-player OMD. I don't want lag or delays like waiting for other people to join even when playing solo. Also, they made this a roguelike. Sounds cool right? Infinite maps to try and figure out how to defend the rift? Yeah, no. There are only 9 maps and the roguelike element is modifiers. And these are tied to maps, so if you want to play a certain map you better hope it doesn't have a bad modifier. Christ.

Worst thing is i always see people complain about maps in older games being designed for 2 players and instead of addressing that they restrict your ability to maze. Sure, barricades are free, but that's not very relevant in a game with dozens of waves.

Oh well, we'll always have OMD3.
