This is a 2025 release I checked out on Steam, but ultimately wound up refunding. I can't really call it a disappointment, because it's quite well made and simply isn't what I had hoped it would be.

It feels a lot as though someone made a Final Fantasy game in the Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire engine, complete with farty trumpet music. Which is kinda part of the problem for me--I really didn't like the music. It's not bad, I just don't like the sound font.

It plays really well. It's pretty much legally distinct SNES Final Fantasy without the ATB system, it's strictly turn-based like Pokemon, where your speed stat determines turn order. I actually really liked the battle system.

Ultimately though, I wound up refunding because in the 2 hours I played, there simply wasn't a narrative hook. It felt like I was just battling and going from place to place without a clear motivation, and in that regard, it felt very Dragon Quest to me.

I think there are people out there that will really, really like this game. I like a lot about it; it just isn't strong enough in terms of music or story to grab me. But if you're fond of this era of turn-based RPG and you want a high-quality homage, this is a great choice.
