I've played later HoI games and it was really interesting to play an earlier one espically seeing how much was done right. BUT unfortunately, it hasn't aged well. Limited resolution, limited mouse button use; scroll wheel doesn't zoom etc.

It seems with these games the one thing they don't really invest in is good "diplomacy" options, this makes me appreciate it way more in later games as many times I was in war for years, would love to end it to focus on growth but it was just easier to wipe out the nation. (Starting as communist china rebelling again nationalist china meant very little infrastructure or technology exists)

I did enjoy playing it but it's age makes it difficult to recommend playing especially when Darkest Hour exists. It uses the same engine but was developed to allow more mouse input, resolutions and just more of what you expect in a modern game. That is what I will be trying next and im excited for it!
