It's a fine game but clearly inferior to the Grimrock saga, specially in regards to the puzzles. The only elaborate puzzle was the books one, and they went overboard with it by not providing any hints about how it works. I'm also not a fan of how almost all enemies ambush you by surprise when entering a room or activating a contraption, instead of just roaming around the levels. I'd also say the skillset isn't well balanced, since dual wielding pistols is pretty much broken once you find two good ones. Something that I really liked was that the secret chests provide some really unique and awesome loot that compels you to look for them, instead of just slightly better items. Levels are varied enough given that it all takes place inside a tower, and there are also some unique "set pieces" that add spice to the adventure (e.g. a gas filled section that requires you to wear a hazmat suit instead of all your equipment, forcing you to use the environment to kill your enemies). Still, a good game and worth a playthrough if you are into grid-based dungeon crawlers.
Inferior to Grimrock in terms of puzzles (most are simple), combat/character development play both of those first before going to this, which you should as the style is awesome: cool environment, high-quality graphics and a great steam punk setting with lots of different environments, not just 10 floors of the same tile-set. And a real feeling of dread, there were many times I was scared or worried. This was due not to just to ominous atmosphere but because enemies are fucking deadly and will often be where you least expect them, then sneak up behind you for a back attack or even worst: corner you rape you to death.
To speak of the problem with character development/combat. You can't be a dedicated spell user. Most spells are supportive in nature with very few attack spells, the one's that do exist scale horribly, have long cooldowns, and are a worst use for your MP than the self-buff spells. You also can't be a dedicated gun user as there simply isn't enough ammo, best case scenario you kill half 'em with guns and half with melee (which is not a bad build at all, as some enemies are way less deadly when …

All builds are melee focused to one degree or another.
For melee options there is dual wield, two hand, crit focused, and mace/sword spec all of which seemed viable. There are also tanky builds which can return damage to enemies or just get really bulky, all of which are also good.
